The Atlantic Coast Conference career record is 102 pass receptions set by North Carolina's Bob Lacey, 1961-63. Zeigler needs 71 yards on pass receptions to match the Atlantic Coast Conference career pass receiving yardage record. North Carolina's Bob Lacey caught passes for 1,362 yards, 1961-63. Zeigler, who caught six passes for 73 yards in South Carolina's opener against Duke, has caught 100 passes for 1,291 yards so far. Floor. n Street Lucas tabbed Defensive end Dave Lucas and tailback Rudy Holloman, will serve as South Carolina's game captains Saturday night when the Gamecocks play North Carolina. Each week, the coaching staff designates two seniors - one of fensive player and one defensive player - to serve as captains for that week's game. At the end of the season -- just before the game with arch-rival Clemson -- the squad elects a permanent captain. Game captains for last week's opening 27-20 win over Duke were defensive halfback Pat Watson and fullback Warren Muir. Lucas and Holloman have been ro. 100 and his twin brother Warren, were both on the football and track teams at Presbyterian in the early 1940s; Ben Moye, father of Gamecock guard Richie Moye, was an outstanding tackle at P.C. through the 1941 season and later served as an assistant coach at his alma mater and head coach at Brookland-Cayce High School; and George Cleckler, a Presbyterian College athlete in the 1930s, is the father of Jimmy Cleckler, a flanker on the Gamecock football squad. The win against Duke was the Gamecocks 300th victory. South Carolina began playing football in 1894 and has won 300 games against 303 losses and 36 ties. A 7-2 record in 1969 would raise the all time Gamecock mark to .500. The Blue Devils can take heart despite Saturday's 27-20 setback at the hands of South Carolina. The loss snapped Duke's un beaten skein for season openers at six. Duke last dropped its season opener to Southern California. That was in 1962. The score was 14 7. Since 1962, the Blue Devils were 5-0-1 in season openers, the tie being a 9-9 deadlock with South Carolina in 1964. The loss to So. Cal. preceded an 8-2 season. Following the defeat, the Dukes reeled off five straight victories before losing to Georgia Tech, 20-9. The Blue Devils then ended their season with three straight triumphs. NUMBER ONE ,. The swimmers began with a week of "land work" to get the soreness out and to get into condition before starting workouts in the pool. The diving team has been number one in the ACC for the last three years and is expected to repeat again this year, but N.C. State Will be a stronger threat than in the past. The experience of John Thoder and Mike Mayfield in NCAA National Finals should anchor the diving team, with freshman Gary Wetherhold a welcome addition to the team. Coach Combes eagerly states, "Wetherhold is one of the finest young divers in the country and should be exciting to watch in the coming years." The one and only... Free style sprinter Trond Williams and Jim Weizettel in the breast stroke are our best hopes of bet tering last season's mark. With middle distance races as George Fairey's speciality, he may be called upon to fill in other areas because of his versatility. The recruiting programs of the coaching staff are starting to pay off, according to Combes, and the experience of 15 returning let termen will add strength to all strokes. With the prospect of having two or three All-Americas and also bettering last year's winning season, this should be one of the most challenging seasons in recent years, Combes thinks.
