One player seems to be a bit shorter and a bit uier and tougher-looking than the rest. lie might resemble, your dud-if your dad happens to be a D.I. at Parris Island. This apparently fearsome crea ture isn't really all that fearsome, though. Eddie Chester, the 26-year-old USC pitcher, does happen to be one of the funniest fellas and one of the more talented chuckers around. He is known by various well-established nicknames, which include "the Dirty Old Man," "Poppa Ed," and "the old, bald man" (receding hairline). Then, seeking a steadier job which wasn't subject to seasonal fluctuatioo, Chester jumped to the big leagues-the U. S. Air Force. "Poppa Ed" spent foul glorious, years in the Air Force, three and a half of thein at Shaw Air Force Base near Sumter, then reluctantly declined appealing re-enlistment offers and high-tailed it down the road to Columbia, where he en rolled at USC in the fall of 1963. The Tigers, who haven't been beaten at home this year, had to rely on a seven-run eighth-inning rally to overcome the Gamecocks before 2,000 screaming Clemson partisans. USC starter Bobby Bryant held Clemson and their famed hitting at tack to only four runs in seven in nings, all of those coming in the bottom of the third. The 'Cocks re taliated with four runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game. Single runs in the top of the sixth and seventh propelled Carolina to a 6-4 lead while Bryant was holding the Tigers in c h e c k. The loss was Bryant's first of the season after he had won four in a row and had al lowed just two earned runs in nearly 45 innings. USC shortstop Frank Partyka rapped out three hits - including comparison to recent years. There is a problem with no seats. It's ab solutely brutal. And our fans don't give it back to them enough down here." Eddie, who is a physical educa tion major "Ha! ha! Phys. Ed. You're dumb.-Bill Cosby, 1966). was married last June to the former Dorothy Bilinsky of Perth Amboy, N. J. They have a young son, just born. Edward Nicholas, who is already being watched by major league scouts. Mother and son are currently living in Perth Amboy, but all the Chesters will be heading south in September to set up shop in Uni versity Terrace. FAdie, a 5-8/1, 170-pound left hander, currently has a 1-0 record with Dick Weldon's varsity troops and also sports an impressive 0.85 earned run average. A fiery com petitor, Chester plans to coach high school basketball in New Jer sey after graduation and later possibly move into the college ranks. Eddl(ie is one of the most ardent of all USC sports fans--and one of the most vocal. Many opposing basketball players have felt the sting of such cutting remarks as "Cool 'uni' fella," and the cool sarcasm of "Boy, are you ever a winner!" "Carolina is about to get into the winning way in all sports, I'm sure of that," observes Ed. "Yes, I think the winning spirit has taken hold." "In baseball, we've blown some games we shouldn't have lost, but, like Coach says, 'that's all in the past. You can't live in the past. You gotta look ahead.' " Eddie counts as his biggest ba'e ball thrill last season's 1-0 victory over Maryland at College Park. With his then-fiancee and plenty of hometown fans in the stands, "Pops" threw eleven innings of shut-out ball before being lifted, for a pinch-hitter. In games of last week, USC won one and lost one during a trip to North Carolina. Friday night at Winston-Salem the G a m e c o c k s turned back Wake Forest, 4-0, be hind Bryant's three-hit pitching. It was the third consecutive shut out for the junior lefthander who helped his cause against the Demon Deacons by slamming a home run. At Durham Saturday afternoon Carolina was the victim of anlother eighth - imaing uprising. With the game tied at 2-2, the Duke Blue Devils scored five unearned runs and went on to winv the game 7-2. LAft hander Loveani McMichael suffered his thir defeat against two victories. This afternoon the 'Cocks will meet the conference-leading North Carolina Tar Heels at the Rex Enright Athletic Field. USC De feated the Tar Heels 1-0 two weeks ago in Chapel Hill. Monday afternoon C a r o l i n a travels to Due West for a return match with Erskine's Flying Fleet. The Gamecocks were victorious in a 2-1, 10-inning decision in their first meeting. Sailors Rank Favored Snot For Va.
