This week, Phi Kappa Sigma defeated Pika to be come the undefeated Fraternity CTham pions. The two teams battled to a 5 1-51 lie and then, due to a mistake on~ the p)art of the officials and the Intramural office, a three-minute overtime period, instead of thel five-minute period specified by in tramural rules was played, and1 Pika proclaimed the winner. A crowd of about 7,000 Caro lina students and fans watched as the two teams unleashed a total of 48 passes, completing 27 of them for 381 yards. The Garnet squad completed 12 of 22 for 163 yards, and the Whites had 15 of 26 for 218 yards. The Garnet team, consisting moo U.; For 11th a really formidable task for Mc Clain's men. They are using thrie sophomores and are much im proved over a year ago. "To give you an idea of how they are this year," says McClain, "their num ber two man from last season is number five this year, and their number one man has beaten Rahim of Clemson." Duke tied the Tigers, 4-4, and has forged a fine record thus far. The Gamecocks have a May 2 engagement with Davidson, plus additional matches with Wofford (two), and ACC champion North Carolina, then the Conference Tournament at Clemson on May 14. Davidson will also be a stern test. They have two of the finest players in the region in Billy Coun cil and Esmond Phelps, numbers one and two, respectively, and they knocked off Presbyterian, a team which defeated USC, 8-1. The Gamecocks now stand three victories above the number pre dicted by McClain for the season ds PIKA Aft npus Baske feated Sigma Chi prior to Pika's saing to Phi Kap. Therefore, Phi Kappa Sigma, with a perfect rec ord, is first in the Fraternity league, followed by Pika, with two losses, both to Phi Kap, with Sigma Nu, having lost only to Pika, sharing the third and fourth place points with Sigma Chi. It is difficult to single out one performer on Phi Kappa Sigma's well balanced team. The Dietzel System was in stalled immediately. The defense, basically a 5-4, was similar in many ways to what the Game cocks had been doing but the "power I" offense was radically different from the old system. As a result, the defense in the first few drills was substantially ahead of the offense. llowever, several (lays before the April 23 intra squad game, Coach Dietzel said the offense "seems to be getting the hang of it" and the overall pictui brightened. le had much praise for the hustle of the squad and the eagerness to learn. The Dietzel staff took over a large squad, numerically, with 35 returning lettermen.
