What happens to a woman after she gets her B.A. and leaves col lege? Want to know the usual answer? She gets married, super vises her home, and has children. But what about her life after her children are grown? Does she remain in the home, or does she pursue outside activities? Many of today's educated mothers are looking toward a career in their later years. They reluctantly put aside their career plans immediately after marriage and settle down to a domestic life. However, their career dreams remain. An experimental program in Connecticut is now offering the housewife-mother with a bache lor's degree a chance to become a full-time teacher, if she has one day a week to spend in studying and training. Called the Darien Program, this experiment is offered by Danbury State College and leads to a graduate degree in educa tion. What are the reactions of the women who have studied under this program? One woman said, "Nothing I've ever done has given me this much direction and purpose. At first I didn't think I could con sider a career, but I was eased into it gradually. The purpose of the program is to help alleviate the teacher shortage and to develop the dor mant talents of housewives. If the experiment, which was begun in February, 1959, is successful, it may be instituted in other areas.
