Selections from the transla tion of the "Iliad" by Dr. Ennis Rees of the English Department will be among the contents of the third issue of the "Crucible," campus literary magazine. Selections from Dr. Rees' translation of the "Odyssey" and the "Iliad" will be issued by Spoken Arts, Inc. on record in late summer. The "Crucible" will be avail able Monday in Russell House, according to the staff. Contents include a s h o r t story, a play, letters to the edi tor . . . and humor. Gamecocks Give Blood GAMECOCKS GIVE BLOOD is the theme of the blood drive being held today from 3 to 9 p.m. in the Russell House Auditorium. The blood drive is sponsored in cooperation with the Red Cross by the Interfraternity Council, and its goal is to top last year's record of 332 donated pints, according to Eddy Brown, chairman. A trophy will be presented to the campus organization with the highest percentage of donors. The ATO's came in first place in last spring's Red Cross Blood Drive. Any other information about the blood drive can be obtained from Eddy Brown at AL 2-1465 or Spencer Moorer, IFC President, at AL 4-3560. S (See Box Below) UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA CROWING FOR A GREATER CAROLINA Vol. LII, No. 28 COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA, MAY 119 1962 Seating Resolution Reversed 'We Like WestBest' Re-Voted Senators Campus discussion resulted in Monday's Student Senate's reversal of its previous decision to move the Carolina cheering section from the West to the East side of Carolina Stadium next year. Jim McElveen made the motion to reconsider the previous vote, because he felt that Student Senate had not voted in accordance with student opinion. "Everybody I talked to asked me why we voted as we did. I felt that we weren't representing the student body in our decision," he said. Another point of discussion was that if the University spent the money necessary to paint the seats garnet and black, and to build a fence between the Carolina section and that of the opposition, it would not be worth the added expense to move back after only a year. It was also mentioned that season tickets are often sold for at least two years or more, and that if the students wished to move jack to the west side, many alumnae would already have tickets for -..ose seats. Taking a stand in favor of the move, Joel Gottlieb said that many students had complained about the sun being uncomfortable during the two November afternoon games, but that in the past many more tickets had been bought on the East side in November than in October by people who felt the sun was not as bright during the later month. Anna Long felt that many students did not realize that the move was set up on a one-year trial basis. It was suggested that the USC student body be given a chance to vote on the issue, but the Senate decided that such a move would be impossible at present. A roll call vote was taken, with the vote being 24-19 against the move. When questioned about his opinion of the reversal, Coach Marvin Bass said that he understood that sale tickets had already been printed for the former student seats on the West side of the stadium. He said that it would be an added expense to have to get rid of these tickets and print new ones. Coach Bass also said for the "mutual benefit of the school, and in order to improve it financially," this move should be made. Concerning the fact that many people wanted to sit on the same side of the field as the football team, Coach Bass said that he had talked with several football players, and that those he had spoken with preferred to have the cheering section across from them so they could hear the cheers. He said that he was disappointed in the reversal, and he hoped that some suitable solution could be arranged. Sumwalt Colle of Engineering will be open i inspection this afternoon after t 4 p.m. ceremony in Drayton Hi which formally names the buil ing for Dr. Sumwalt, president the University.
