When A Girl
Graduates?
What happens to a woman after
she gets her B.A. and leaves col
lege?
Want to know the usual
answer? She gets married, super
vises her home, and has children.
But what about her life after
her children are grown? Does
she remain in the home, or does
she pursue outside activities?
Many of today's educated
mothers are looking toward a
career in their later years. They
reluctantly put aside their career
plans immediately after marriage
and settle down to a domestic
life. However, their career dreams
remain.
An experimental program in
Connecticut is now offering the
housewife-mother with a bache
lor's degree a chance to become
a full-time teacher, if she has one
day a week to spend in studying
and training.
Called the Darien Program,
this experiment is offered by
Danbury State College and leads
to a graduate degree in educa
tion.
What are the reactions of the
women who have studied under
this program?
One woman said, "Nothing
I've ever done has given me this
much direction and purpose. At
first I didn't think I could con
sider a career, but I was eased
into it gradually.
The purpose of the program is
to help alleviate the teacher
shortage and to develop the dor
mant talents of housewives. If
the experiment, which was begun
in February, 1959, is successful,
it may be instituted in other
areas.

Healthful Living
Is the Best Diet
Hollywood stars stay slim by
eating candy, young executives
ull by means of a liquid diet substi
t tute. But what on earth can
. co-eds do to keep those awful
ith pounds away?
m- Here are a few helpful hints
)k- which require little exercise or
unhealthy dieting. If you follow
ost the rules, you too can be slim,
trim, and beautiful.
ew The sedentary habits of college
at students are one reason for large
*nd hips and thighs. While in class,
to sit up straight, keep shoulders
Ieerect. Don't be tempted to slouch.
Slouching upsets the proper dis
ms tribution of weight and puts more
ith weight on hips and thighs, caus
Lke ing them to spread.
ar- Contracting the muscles of
those flabby areas will tighten
are them. You can do this while
ich rolling up your hair or taking a
.nd shower.
Eat healthful, wholesome foods.
nt- Fresh salads and lean meats are
to your best bet. Eat more of them
er- and have smaller portions of pie,
nt, cake, or ice cream. Large help
>ur ings of bread and potatoes are
an taboo, but don't cut them out al
in- together.
ak- Spend your spare time wisely.
me Dancing is fine, but tennis, swim
Lan ming, golf, etc., can be fun as
old well as helpful in keeping you
rou trim and healthy.
ne- You needn't use that scarce cash
for expensive, so-called quick diet
aids. You don't have to give up
your leisure time doing various
exercises. All you really need to
do is use correct posture, propor
tion you diet to its vitamin and
mineral value, and enjoy yourself
with a few athletic activities.
