Here, for th first time, is a readable definitioi of the Administration Goobledy gook - used especially by th Housing Office. Take note: "It is in process" means a wrapped up in red tape that th situation is almost hopeless. "We will look into it"... oi maybe if we leave it long enougl you'll forget about the whol thing. "Expedite" -:- Confound confa sion with,commotion. "To implement the program" - the president will hire more peopl and expand the office or make I a graduate program and let the as sistants do the work. "Under consideration" - we'r searching the files for it. "Reliable source" - the guy yo just met. "Informed source" the gu who told the guy you just met. "Unimpeachable source" - h started the rumor. This defi nition brings us to the most im D portant p r i n c i p l e of 'Islam, 8' namely, the belief In the exis tence of one-God. Holy Book The Koran, the holy book of Moslems, declares that, unlike any other sin, disbelief in the , oneness of God is unforgivable. Islam is so uncompromising on this point that the Koran end lessly- reaffirms it and makes it t a point to specifically deny, re peatedly, the view of the nature of Christ held by Christians. His Prophet u In addition w believing in God, a Moslem must believe that Mo hammad is His prophet. How ever, the Koran recognizes other e prophets, among whom Jesus 4 and Moses are given prominence. These were true prophets, the d Koran says, and they preached the word of God, BUT ... their teachings have been changed by their followers; for example, Christians gave Christ a position He never claimed for Himself. u Christian Teaching ,t A Moslem is another believer o in a second life. Death is not the end of existence, for men will - relive and face judgement. As or Christianity teaches, a man, after being judged by God, will e be found heading toward one of the two famous destinations. Whether he will go to the one and not to the other depends on how he behaves here on earth. it Since salvation depends on k conduct, the Koran contains in numerable commandments which le a believer must observe. Duties Of Moslems With this belief In the one ness of God, in His prophets and the Day of Judgement, a Moslem must observe fdur other duties. He must pray five times a day and fast from sun up to sun down all the month of Ramadan (this is the ninth month of the Moslem-lunar-year). He must also give alms to the poor, and go on pilgrimage to Mecca, the holy city of Islam where the prophet Mohammad Contrasting Nc [n Paris And I "The Arch of Triumph," by Erieh Marie Remarque, D. Apple ton-Century Co., Inc. In this novel Remarque has left he Fatherland, which he seldom loes, and has set up his plot in Parls during the late '30's. The tory concerns a love affair which was almost as star-crossed as the amous Verona tangle. Thm f;Wry The main character is Ravic, a lerman doctor, who has left Ger nany because of the Gestapo and a supporting himself in Paris by -hecking the employees of a see mnd rate brothel and operating for ncompetant society doctors. Being without papers, Ravic loves a life )f hide and seek. The girl is Joan, a woman who tas entertained several lovers, bul who is still ironically discreet. Attempted Suicide The two meet when Ravic saved Foan from suicide following thi Jeath of her fourth lover. Weary student saying on reg istration day that the only thing left for him to do was to have classes from 6 until 9 on Satur day nights. Professor giving his class tips on sure ways to win a bet. Freshman skipping w i I d I y across the Horseshoe after learn ing that he had passed his math placement test. Student's comment about his wtekend at 'Y' retreat: "Some got knowledge, some got inspira tion, but I got 'red bugs.'" Cash Retains A.I.Ch.E. Position Of President Charles Cash will retain his posi tion of president as customary, in the student chapter of the Ameri can Institute of Chemical Engi neers. Other officers elected are: Harold Sturm, vice-president; Joe McElory, secretary; and Bob Po teat, treasurer. The activities of the A.I.Ch.E. this semester will be mainly con cerned with the A.I.Ch.E. South eastern Regional Conavention, which will be held at the University on March 18, 19 and 20. Delegates from 13 southern col leges and universties will attend. These are called "the five pillars of Islam." Islam is one of the most simple religions to understand; the rules of the Faith are stated without ambiguity. One may believe, and he may not, but he cannot claim that a certain point is beyond his com prehension; as far as I know, there is nothing in the Moslem religion as difficult to under stand as the concept of Trinity in Christianity. Mohammad Religion When Mohammad started his mission, he Is said to have ex plained his religion as follows: "My teachings are simple; there is but One God, and Mo hammad is his prophet; give up idolatry; do not steal; do not lie; do not slander; and never be come intoxicated. Remarque's characterization is often ambiguous and his complete omition of mirth is a bit macabre, but the book will appeal to those who appreciate the brutle sharp ness of the German mind and the author's Hemingway scented real ism. * * * "Reflectiohs in a Golden Eye," by Carson McCullers, Houghton Miffin Co. In this short book McCullers presents some of her prize inha bitants from her already bulging menagerie of off beat and deeply moving characters. The Story As qUoted from the book: "There is a fort in the South where a few years ago a murder was com mitted. The participants of this tragedy were: two officers, a soldier, two women, a Filipino, anc a horse." One of the officers, a captain has a voluptuous wife who is hav ing an affair with a major. Th4 latter's sickly wife, who is drawr to a Filipino house boy, has mu. tilated her breasts after learning of her husband's affair. The Stable Boy This complex tale is shadowe by the doings of an animalist< stableboy who is fascinated by thi captain's wife. The story endi with the tragically destined deati of the stableboy. Summation In this story McCullers pushes driving desires and pulsating emo tions into the open. Graham holds an A.B. degree from the American University In Rev. Leroy Graham Washington, D. C., and a B.D. degree from Drew Theological Seminary in Madison, N. J. He has had a year of service in marriage training in Phila delphia. Purposes Of Courses The purposes of these courses are to give to students the needed information and explain the morality of sex. His discussions are taken from the questions which students ask in regard to any of the three words in the title of the lecture. The course will cover all phases of sex. Questions and discussions will be made on re production, perversions, love and sex, sex drive in dating, and early marriage problems. Film Strip This past Wednesday night, Prof. Graham showed a film on human reproduction. Another film strip will be shown on Wednesday, February 11. Discussion At Newberry This past weekend, Prof. Gra ham led a discussion group at the South Carolina Christian Action Intercollegiate Seminar at Newberry College. The stu dents who heard him were very impressed over his message. He supplied everyone with vital in formation concerning sexual ma turity. Students Asked To Attend Anyone on campus may attend these courses, and everyone is asked to take time out to attend them. The course starts at 7:00 p.m. and lasts from one to two hours. Signals Investigated Linfield Research Institute, lo cated on the campus of Linfield College, has been awarded a grant from the National Science Foun dation for scientific investigation using earth satellite radio signals.
