It'll be Wake Forest Game Fierce Tradition The football series between the Carolina and Wake Forest has i been one of the most exciting and closest of the South's football riv- li alries. Ever since World War II the Gamecocks and Deacons have been N making a habit of closing out their - seasons against each other, and such will be the case in the USC Wake meeting here Thursday aft ernoon. Only in 1949, 1954 and 1955 did the Gamecocks and Deacs veer from their season-ending course. Met 12 Times Since the war the two teams have met 12 times, and they have won six games each, although the Deacons lead the overall series, 15-13-2. South Carolina has won - the latest games, however, includ ing last year's 26-7 verdIct at Winston-Salem, N. C. Close scores have been a tradi tion, too. Leading thrillers have been the 6-0 USC victory in 1947, Carolina's 27-20 edge in 1949, Wake's 14-7 victory in 1950, the Deacons' 19-13 upset at Charlotte, N. C., in 1953, a 21-19 Carolina triumph in 1954, and the 13-0 win for the Gamecocks at Charlotte in 1956. This year's game will match Wake's dangerous passing attack, led by quarterback Norman Snead, against South Carolina's powerful running game. Saunder's Bids For Title Twvo fine fullbacks, John Saund ers of the Gamecocks and Neil MacLean of Wake, also figure strongly in the pre-game compari son. By JERRY HICKEY Sports Editor Coach Warren Giese's Game cocks, fresh from their 12-7 vic tory over N. C. State's Wolfpack 'N last Saturday, face a highly-touted Wake Forest team tomorrow at 2:00 in a duel that could prove to be the most significent game of the season for the Gamecocks. First of all, the Gamecocks have the chance to complete the season with one of the most impressive records ever competed by a Caro lina team. Coach Giese's charges have won six of their nine games this season, including viptoriel over conference foes Duke, Clemson, Virginia, and N. C. State. Chance For Bowl Bid Secondly, should the Gamecocks down the Demon Deacons, they will stand an excellent chance of getting a bid to a post-season bowl game, possibly the Gator Bowl. Rumor has it that Clemson's AC Conference championship is being wooed by the Cotton Bowl. Should the Tigers be offered this bid, and accept, Carolina would probably be the logical choice for the Gator Bowl bid. Then there are several individual performers who will be looking for ward to the Wage game for a chance to "show their 'stuff." The game will present an op portunity for halfback Alex Hawk ins, who was recently named to the first string of the select ACC All-Conference team, to make his bid for All-American honors. Alex has been chosen as Carolina's top back in the last two games by sportswriters covering the games. I W8...*****. nao0sm eajo to in IBM,t ras 0ett ervics tee. RY PRDUcT
