RECORD REVIEW New Soui On Jazz| By Dave Bledoe Music Analyst One of the finest Jazz records I've heard In a long time came out recently on an Argo label. It's e,alled "2:88 a.m.," and it's by the Ralph Sharon quartet and friend. As the friend just hap pens to be Candido, It's not too hard to guess that the sounds coming up will have top-flight rhythm--which they do. Brubeck Competition As far as quartets of this type go, I would have said that Bru beck was tops, but this album seriously threatens Dave's top position. One of the big faults of Brubeck Is that his jazz is a little too commercial. By commercial, I mean that the indefinable touch of superb im provisation is sometimes lacking. . . . ....... Ralph Sharon Sharon-whom I had never heard before to any great extent manages to keep the feeling of intimacy while recording at a studio. The numbers have a drive, but they are never over w'rked. Contents Besides Sharon, there was Billy Exner on drums, an English Bass player named Allan Mack, plus the great Candido. The album starts with "Blues," composed by Sharon, then moves into "Old Man River." "Garden in the Rain" FORl0 707 Ha COLU "Watch id Heard ;cene follows, and side one ends wit "Lover's. Lullaby," and "Teact Me Tonight." After hearing "I'll never be the same," the highlight of side two, you'll never be the same. It'a impossible to be indifferent to this album, no matter what your taste In jasz is. Other Argo's Perhaps a word or two about the record company that putA this fine work out would be iri order, just recently I was brows. ing the latest releases of the Argo company, and I listened to some more albums . . .AmaJ Amahl has a new one, and there is one by the Melavano orchestra that I can't figure out. If you ask me, the name sounds like a cross between Mantovani and Melachrino, and so help me that's exactly how it sounds Great music for that "in betweer Mantovani and Melachrino" mood but not much good for anything else. It has become the mark of the college set, and rightly so, because it uses blends of colors with prompt noticibility. Of course you have the glen plaids, tweeds and checks, but nothing pronounces color more than the traditional stripe. Other weaves have color, but they are more blended and quiet. The stripe brings each color into its own and to the front. Variety of Stripes This fall you are seeing the stripe not only in jackets and . ties, but also in sweaters, shirts, wind-breakers and t r o u s e r s. Stripes are nice and should be worn, but there is a way-a cer tain way-to wear them which is often neglected. Some outfits, combine so many stripes that they give candy stick-effect. I have seen boys wear a striped coat with a striped shirt, striped tie and trousers. We all make the same mistake when we are in a hurry and don't take time to match colors or weaves. Rules For Wearing You notice stripes everywhere in a variety of colors. The trouble is no one really tells us how we are suppose to wear them. I went digging around for information and came up with a few ideas that might be helpful. There are a million ways you can wear stripes, and just as many wvays not to wear them. Only one striped item should be wvorn in an outfit. For example when you are wearing a striped jacket you do not wear a striped shirt, a striped tie or even striped trousers. A striped jacket calls for a solid shirt and a print tie-a foulard or ancient Madda, and after Camels than :te today. And no avor and easygoing blend of costly to ieen equalled. In buy ing ties you should think of this and try to make the most of your purchases in the prints. Solid Matches Casual wear--sports shirt and trousers--presents the least prob lem especially if the trousers are in solid color. Any type sports shirt may be worn with solids. When you wear striped trousers try to complinent them by using a solid shirt or a light check. The three boys in the picture have the right idea on what to wear with what. The outfits shown have the proper amount of stripes to go well with the solids.
