They weren't playing the same team that once took the honors of a Rose Bowl victory under the Georgia Tech colors, but they were playing the role of underdog to a highly rated eleven. It feels fine to be on the right side of the fence when we've known all along that the Garnet and Blacks had plenty of Fpower to get there. You can't pick out individual stars very well in any game and still give credit to all those who deserve it and in a match. like this it is next to impossible. Still, it's hard to overlook the running of Wadiak, especially when he set up and made the winning touchdown. P'asky looked better in the quarterback position and Balka showed that he could do well enough on his own. There was Tackle Don Early and End Fred Duckett and Fullback Billy Kincaid and on and on. It's hard to try to keep from attempting to pick out the stars, too. The lines looked much better, even considering that the Tech forward wall was lighter. All of them looked good. In fact, we even considered predicting a Carolina victory, but the experiences of others teaches a lot. The fellow who will more than likely write up the game between the Game cocks and Furman tonight, Scoop Latimer of the "Greenville News," as you recall vent "out on a limb" and predicted a Furman upset over Georgia some years ago. The game ended with Furman being nearly 70 points in the red and Scoop found out how it is to feel as little as a chigger on the sitting end of a bumble bee. Revolt In the years gone by plenty of the best teams in the nation came right out of the deep, solid South. Somewhere between then and now something happened and the cold North took over as leader in this sectional battle for foot ball prominence. But look at the section in your last Sun day's paper where it says "Results of Yesterday's Games" and you may notice something. It isn't a revolutionary change, yet slowly but surely things are looking up in the land of the honeysuckle and sugar cane. Some pre-war powerhouses are becoming powerhouses again. For instance, there is a Blue Devil squad called Duke, and most of us saw what they had to contribute to the cause a couple of weeks ago at Carolina stadium. It's ol( news now, but )uke trounced Pittsburgh last Saturday to the tune of 28 to 14. Another illustration, and probably the strongest, was drawn by North Carolina in the Notre Dame game. North Carolina will be around visiting before long, as will Clemson with the Tigers who tore up the border state, Missouri. Boy ! Then there was Southern Methodist's slim but decisive victory over Ohio State-but the Methodists have been Con federate leaders for quite some tinw. Add Washington and Lee's win over West Virginia and William and Mary in the Cincinnati tussle. Maryland's trouncing of Navy fits here, too, as does Louisville over Buffalo. And South of the Mason-Dixon line, where Southern in stitutions tangled among themselv.es this p)ast week-end, add(ed powver came fronm uinexp)ectedl quarters. First and foremost was the Gamecock dlubbing of the Resting Wrecks. Alabama made a strong showing in dlefeating Tulane, as did Mississippi State over Tennessee and Wake Forest's over whelming score of 43-0 ov.er Richmond. Windl it up with Baylor 34, Houston 7. The Confederate forces ar'e showing new. strength this yea', giving ample proof that the South is bound to rise once more. Last Saturday, playing with a kot nmore experience and some additional hair, he proved he was worth his sodium chloride as a varsity nman. Fred was a vital cog in ('arolina's unvaunted passing offense which exploded violently on unsuspecting liobby l)odd and a few platoons of his flanhrasted enneer. Sports quiz Werner Strauss, Sumter and Tenement 2H, wins the two tickets to the Carolina theater this week for c .rrectly identifying A. C. '(;erman'' Schulz, one of the all time greats who played center for Michigan right after the turn of the century. Another student who must know his football is Bernum Ashley, who also answered correctly. Al though it is the usual procedure to award only the first man who gets the correct answer in the campus mail, Mr. Ashley is going to get a single ticket to the Caro lina as the one and only excep tion. '1'his is partly because the quiz has just begun for the semes ter and partly because that wasn't exactly the easiest question a per son could ask. These two were the only men to send in correct answe rs. The tckets are in the mail. This one is a snap. In 1944 two great teams met an(d the underdog won, but by the skin of his teeth. One of the powerhouses was Navy, strong in both line and backfield. The other team showed up slightly better in only one (e partment, passing. Navy was supposed to be the winner and with six minutes left to )lay, the sailors were on the high end of a 15-14 score. The opposition took the ball down to Navy's 12-yard line where they were stopped cold. It was fourth down when an op posing freshman, Allen Bowen, stepped back to the 18-yard line and kicked a field goal through the uprights and the score stood at 17 to 15 in favor of the undea - dog. Navy made a strong come back and drove 62 yards to the one-inch line when the final whistle blew. All you have to do to win two tickets to the Carolina theater is to send in the name of the team who squeezed out Navy in this close fight. Alumni Rally is Held In Atlanta The pre-game rally and lunch eon, 1)receding the Georgia Tech Carolina tangle in Atlanta, Ga., last Saturday, was attended by approximately 250 persons. The luncheon, which was given by Alumnus E. Smythe Gambrell, was held in the Lawyer's Club. Alumni president, Calhoun Thom as, told of the association's plan.. for the coming year and a speech was delivered by the alumni secre tary, Ralph Lewis. Attending the luncheon was I-erman L. Spahr of the class of 1895, one of the university's okle-t living alumni.
