Biddies Beal Await "Big By BOB WALLACE The Carolina "Biddies" are sharpening their fledgling spurs this week in preparation for the forthcoming tussle with the Clem son "Baby Bengals." After last week's rout of the Furman fresh men the Biddies feel sure that they can take the Cubs in stride. In their first outing this season the Baby Bengals trounced The Citadel 36 to 0. From the showing last Friday, the Biddies are loaded. The for ward wall was solid from end to end, and the backfield exploded with five very capable ball car riers. Johnny Gramling's smooth ball handling enabled the select five to break into the open for long gains. Bobby Drawdy and Gene Wilson were the only two not to get into the scoring act but they were indispensable in setting up touchdowns on several occasions. "Jeepers" Jeffcoat started his col lege career with a bang by scoot ing 27 yards for a touchdown the first time he got his hands on the ball. Jimmy Cox led the scoring parade with a touchdown and three PAT's (points after touch Above is a Birds-eye i Strickland, who had only one in Bish" from Mullins. In doing s< game. (Photo by Teal). r. Supper l'R STREET Don Earley Big Don Earley, Carolina tackle, has been named "Sopho more of the Week" in the Southern Confbrence by the Associated Press for his excep tional play in the Gamecock Tech game last Saturday. Earley received this honor be cause of his interception of a Yellow Jacket pass just as the Rambling Wrecks were rolling close to the Carolina goal and because of his brilliant work at tackle in this game as well as in the Duke opener. As a con sistent performer of his duties all season. Earley certainly de serves this title. Carolina coaches predicted that great things were in store for Don back when the Biddies had played only a couple of games last year and Line Coach Hank Bartos especially looked on him as an "ace in the hole." Going on his performance thus far this season, the forecast is fair and warmer where Don Earley is concerned. Tipping the scales at 205, he is a native of Vandergrift, Pa. The Birds take with them high hopes of rak ing in a large measure of revenge from the Hurricanes who scored a 14-7 surprise win over them last year at Carolina stadium. The victory over Georgia Tech brought to light some of the strong est defensive play on the part of the Gamecocks that Carolina fan dom has been treated to in quite some time. Defensively, the Bird machine had little trouble with Tech's run ning game, stalling the Yellow Jackets for a net gain of less than 50 yards, and holding the cele brated Bobby North, to a scant 29 yards. Twenty-one Tech passes were good for but eight comple tions, while Carolina backs gathered in three interceptions. Particularly impressive in last week's win was the passing attack brought from under wraps by the ts in the Duke opener at Carolina s tackler made a desperate lunge to k v from this fall which kept him froi CO MP R H ANY THME U SMOKE HEM ~an tell Che erfields w ccos that sm 1 milder si SMOKE HEM ave no unpleasant aft4 I SMOKE T HEM you~ cigarette can give yo : T HEY SATISFY, ks, After man Hir Enrightmen. Ed Pasky chipped in with three completions to boost the total to seven. Tonight the Hurricanes will throw two nifty halfbacks at the Game cocks. Big Ed Jasonek will team with Milton "Sonny" Horton to give Furman a running attack that Hurricane rooters are depending upon to repeat last year's upset performance. In addition to Ja sonek and Horton, the men from Greenville offer speedy Lamon Moates, whom Carolina fans will remember for his game-winning 73-yard touchdown jaunt after gathering in a Bird punt. These three backs alone should give Sparks, Smith, Skinner and Company due cause to duplicate their defensive chores of a week ago. tadium.
