Teams from F Jel, and South Carolina will en will be on hand to -represent Pj The Carolina mermen lost their - first meet of the season to a more experienced Clemson team 17-28. The match was much closer and more interesting than the icore indicated. Carolina swim mers placed in seven of the nine ?vents but Clemson's first place monopoly ih six starts enabled the visitors to coast to a win. Walker took first place in the 50-yard and 100-yard free-style and was also on Clemson's win ning 400-yard relay team. Derwin "Doc" Lamb won the 150-yard back stroke for Caro lina and Spruce McCain 'won the 200-yard breast stroke; Bob Kay also placed in the back stroke vent. Bill Wright turned in good Lime in both the 50-yard and 100 yard freestyle, capturing a see )nd place in the former and a third place in the latter race. Marshall Upton and' John Can tey were the Carolina mainstays in the distance events; Upton placed in both the 200-yard and 100-yard freestyle. Howard King and Leslie Boney ihared honors in the fancy diving competition, an event that ap pears to be one of the team's strongest. Keith Affeld, counted on heavily in the 100-yard and 200-yard reestyle events, was lost to the Leam through sickness but will flobably be able to swim in the itate meet. Martin Leads USC Seorers; TrewhellaNext b of Forward Henry Martin was the highest scorer on the Gamecock basketball squad, including games through Saturday night, with 203 he points. D4 Steve Trewhella, guard, was second with 167 points, Al Adams, center, was third with 164 points and Cy Szakacsi was fourth with 158 points. In fifth place was Phil Cantore, forward, with 146 points, while Jimmy Slaughter's 132 points placed him sixth. Fred Atkinson Named Tennis Team Captain Fred Atkinson, junior from Hartsville, was elected captain of the 1948 Carolina tennis team at a meeting of returning Gamecock players Tuesday afternoon. A tkinson did not play for Caro Iinia last season but held down the No. 1 position during the 1946 season. He left school at the end >f 1946 but enrolled for the 1947 raIl semester. Charlie Seay of Wofford, honorary cap tain, and Bob Stewart of Furman, were also repeaters from last year. Rounding out the team were Erskine's Les Davidson, leading scorer in the state, and Leonard Riddle of Clemson. Carolina's Henry Martin and Cy Szakacsi won berths on the second team, while center Jimmy Slaughter was placed on the third team. Gaining honorable mention were Steve Trewhella and Phil Cantore. Juniors Win Girls' Intramural Title; Beat Frosh 52-44 The junior class won the girl's intramural basketball champion ship by defeating the freshmen 52-44 Monday in the finals of the WAA sponsored tournament. The juniors had defeated the freshmen 47-31 in the first game of the se ries Thursday. Outstanding player of the eve ning was Catherine Wallace, cap tain of the juniors, who racked up 21 points to share scoring honors with Jane Bailey of the freshmen. Buist and Brown of the juniors shot 16 and 11. points respectively, while McLean and Steinberg of the losers shot 12 and 11.
