GAMECOCI CAROLINA .OPE TOMORROI ERSKINE IS OPPONENT Visitors Have Best Team in Sev eral Years-Held Clemson to 7-0 Score The teams will line up tomorrow at three-thirty promptly. All stu dent s must bring their athletic tickets or else will not be admitted to the contest. The officials are Burns (Idaho), and Osborn (Wof ford and South Carolina). Tomorfow comes Saturday-and with it the Erskine Seceders. From the f Due West encampment comes news l that the little college has a stronger I team than has hitherto even been im agined. The Clemson Tiger almost I spent himself in a mighty effort to con quer the Seceder last Saturday, and I only did so, after Herculean work in J the closing minutes of the contest. I Thl game points to the fact that Ers kine has a very strong team or that - Clemson is putting out a very weak machine. The latter surmise is unlike ly, because early season dope gave Clemson credit for having a much bet ter team than was on the field last year. Although tomorrow is the day for the inital contest to be staged Vn Ca rolina's magnificent new athletic field, it is not the occasion for the official dedicational exercises. This is to be reserved until the following Saturday, when the University of Maryland comes to play Carolina for the first time. Notwithstanding, the game will be a gala affair. Those who have not seen the new gridiron yet, will get the surprise of their lifes. Tier after tier of sections rise high in the air, the topmost seats seemingly reaching up to mingle with the horizon. Bleachers inclose the field on three sides. A repitition of the Harvard stadium, one might say. A wire fence incloses the playing field, which is covered with wire grass, and is as level and regular as a billiard table. It is the superior of any gridiron in the state. Best known of the Seceders hopes is Derril Pratt. This "flaming youth" is calculated to strike terror into Game cock heais. Echols, end, and Williams tackle, are considered to be real threats. "Dode" Phillips is bringing a real team to Columbia this year. They have the advantage over Caio lina, in the fact that they have already gone through the "stage fright" ex perience of their first game, while Bo cock's charges are as yet untried. S at urday we will ascertain exactly just how much this asset is to matter in the final result of the struggle. Bocock had his men scrimmaging with th~e scrubs Wednesday. They I uncorked a lightning offense that scored five touchdowns in thirty min utes play. Bill Rogers, Swink, Wim berly, and Bill Cooper started off in the backfield. These four will be used Saturday. Powel Rogers, who is making quite a reputat.ion for himself at fullback, is out of the list with a bad knee. Stackhouse, Wingfield, Griffin, Hall, Fair, and others will be given a] chance. At ends the exact rating is not known. Holcombe, stellar pass receiver, has had examinations hang ing over him, but stood them and came through with flying colors, and is ready to play. Keels, Verner, Burke, Windus, and Vogel are other candi dates. At one tackle Seideman has a place cinched. Thomas will probably get the other tackle with Carson Wolfe and Watson pi-imed to enter in case he should falter. Price and Abel are guardsm. Guarino, and Stewart are certain to get in. The great Captain Boyd is to play center. "Red" Fulmer is substitute. Two o'clock is the time. A good many tickets have been sold, and a good crowdl is expected. Burns (Idaho), and Osborne (Wofford) are the officials. But this time intermingled with the bright mem ories is a sadder one. There will be an ache in the heart of every old man, when he thinks of Doc tor Melton. No more will the c, stands arise and acclaim him as he enters the field. Beloved by thep students, the entrance of the de ceased president was an occasion sl almost as big as the game itself. r Doctor Melton never missed a game and his presence was an in spiration to the team. If any man t ever loved the team it was Doc tor Melton. Let us remember him f on that day. sc ,ET US HOPE for a let up in the h: heat on Saturday. It has been b; terrifically hot for football. The coach will appreciate it. fC OB WIMBERLY looks just as good w this year as he did last year, and iF should be in better shape. He na toughened up his fibers during the w sweltering summer months, by "slinging gas" in a filling station. tI Bob dosen't need gas to keep him s< going. There is a good- r< sized chance that "Dode" Phillips s< has dug up a team out of this e "pint size" college that can harass s even the mighty Gamecock. The spirit of the Erskine student body" is wonderful. It is the hardlest thing in the world to cheer a los ing team, but the Seceders al ways fight. T IS A SHOCK to learn that Power Rogers will probably be out of the game Saturday. However, it is not definitely known whether he will '1 be out or not. Rogers has been sick this summer, and has develop ed a sore knee since practice started. He will be keenly watched by many admirers in his first ap pearance in a varsty nifor.., SECEDERS BILL BOYD OACHES STAFF ONE OF FINEST OF SOUTHEAST oach Branch Bocock Directs the Destinies of Athletic Teams at the University TONEY HEADS FRESHMEN Rooster" McFadden, Cantey, Seibels, Murdaugh, Waring Staff of Assistants Carolina boasts one of the finest >aching and managerial staffs in the )utheast. Highest in rank is His Im !rial Majesty Branch Bocock. irouded in his royal robes of mole :in, he is the supreme dictator in di ct'ng the destinies of the mighty amecocks. Bocock is popdlar with the >ys. They are behind him from start finish. Second in command of the poultry _ rm is none other than our own ooster" McFadden. We have yet to e anyone who is better liked by the ayers than "Rooster." They consider in as just "one of the boys." The tckfield is his specialty. McFadden a former Davidson College star. Jack antey is the reserve coach. The li'rd stringers" had a short tussle ith the Columbia High school eleven st week, and came out slightly ruf ed. 'Burnett Stoney heads the coaching >ster of the Freshman team. Stoney an old Carolina man and has the stitution at heart. Last year was s first here, and his Biddie eleven :pt up the "rep." Assisting him are alder Seibels, of Columbia, a rmer Yale man, "Alec" Murdaugh, amecock tackle of two years ago, ho is unable to play on account of juries, and Waring, an old Carolina an who came in to help Stoney last eek. With these men at the head of ings, Carolina has no alibi for a bad ason on account of insufficient di ct ion. They are men who have the aditions, and ideals of Carolina with iem on the field and off. The morale F the squad is excellent. We see noth ig to hold the fighting Gamecock of rood old Carolina" from running >ughshod over every team on the :hedule. We have pretty nearly an ven chance to win every game on the :hedule. Why not ? -- U.S.C. - DODE" CARRIED HIS team to the heights when he was eligible to play, and it may he that merly the presence of this great player will be enough to carry thenm to the top. Phillips is probably the great est player South Carolina ever prodluced. HE SECEDER'S brightest star is Derril Pratt. He played a mag nificent game last year.
