RATS AWAKEN MAIN STREET FRIDA Y NIGHT Columbia Thrown into Chaos as Students Parade City's Principal Streiet ALL SHIRT-TAILS ARE OUT Climax Comn. to College Night As Gamecock Supporters Tell Columbia They Are Back Yelling, cheering, singing, hooting, raving young savages awoce Main street of Columbia last Friday night from a slumber of over three months. Pedestrians paused to gaze in awe and consternation; traffic on the principle thoroughfare of the capital city came to a halt; the police force resigned for the time Ling; street cars were "jerked;" Columosa was viewing the annual "College Night" shirt-tail pa rade staged by the freshmen of the University of South Carolina. Columbia was the goat as the new men of the state institution began their active college careers. Careers that the faculty, registration, and other symbols of college life cannot abet. The freshmen were getting the real old .'arlia sp'it;" t-e spiril with a kick and vim; the pep that lasts a life time and is never forgotten. Yes, Co lumbia was the goat as the long thin line moved up and down the street to turn the dignified city into chaos. Across streets, on side walks, thru traffic, into theatres, everywhere, un der the leadership of Jimmy Baldwin and his assistants, cheered on by en thusiastic upper classmen, the line wended its way. Shirt-tai is out, many in pajamas, and other unconventional attire, none cared or objected. This line was irrestible, as some who tried to buck it, found to their sorrow. Even a motorman's pistol had no effect. The state capitol alone stopped t1f wild throng, but only because the stop was voluntary. In front of the majes tie building all halted and shook the very foundations with mighty cheers, lustly songs and deep roars. Finally, exhausted of energy, but inbued with so'rit, the gay crowd dispersed and slowly found its way back to the cam pus to seek much needed repose.- An other college night was ended and Co lumbia is safe for another year. - U.s.c. - Design Students to Try Cover Designing Cover to Be Sketched for South Carolina State Fair Pag eant Program The art department of the Uni versity has been asked by the stage society producers of tfie big pageant to be given at the state fair, to have the students of design, compete in making a eover design for the program books. The same interior design is to be used this year as last, and a cover is wanted to symbolize the spirit and industry of the State of South Caro lina and the pageant as much as pos sible. On Saturday at nine-thirty, a repre sentative of the printing company who is to print the programs will meet with one of the design classes and all comn pet'tors would do well to attend and hear his instructions, as to size and color. He will bring samples of paper and particulars will be announced at this time. No material prize is offered for this design, but the idea that ones name will be before ten thousand of the people of South Carolina as designer of this cover should be enough to make any would-be artist put on his or her think ing cap. - U.s.C. Athene Club Elects Four New Officers At a meeting of the Athene club held last week on Green street, the follow ing officers were elected: president, Miss Gladys Young of Fairfax; vice president, Miss Margaret Lyon of Co lumb'a; secretary and treasurer, Miss Margaret McCall of Flor,ence. Several imortant matters were discussned. Real Gamecock Now Strutting on Campus Beaufort Lad Brings Rooster to School-Training Him to Crow for Carolina Beaufort's representatives at the University felt that the real spirit must be shown in more ways than Qne, so Ihey brought up a real live rooster, or as we-now call him, a Gamecock. This male chicken weathered the. voyage up successfully, though he had several experiences while attempting the "col legiate method" of travel, hoboing. Exactly where the emblem of Caro lina is kept when not in service is not known, but when the necessity arises, he appears upon the scene with that proud strut. His condition is reported as fine and improving, and the boys declare that he con lick any tiger, hur ricane, or bulldog in the country. He crows for Carolina. -U .s.c. Danny Reed to Use Students in Plays C. L. 4Cuttino Takes the Leading Part in First Stage Society Production "Danny" Reed of the Town Theatre is already beginning to use some of the Carolina students in his stage society productions for this se'sion after tit s':ces;tul work accoroplished with them last year. The first production of this year is "Arms and the Man" in which Mr. Charles L. Cuttino, a law student, is taking a leading role. Mr. R. B. Hilderbrand, a junior in the academic school, is being presented for the first time to a stage society audience. The play is in Bulgarian costume, and with Mrs. "Danny" Reed dong her usual creative work on costumes it bid fair to be one of the most unique we have seen. - U.s.c. Sophomore Girls Elect New Officers Eirene Mayers Named President, Lilie Garner, Vice-President Iola Roberts, Secretary The girls of the sophomore class in the Woman's Building were called to a meeting on Tuesday night by Miss Ida Johnston, former president, for the purpose of electing a new representa Eive on the house committee. Miss Eitha Geirald was elected last year, but did not return to school this fall. Miss Lena Stevenson was secretary, but she also failed to take up her. ttidies again. Miss Eirene Mayers is the new president; Miss Lillie Garner, vice-president; Miss Iola Roberts, ;ecretary; and Miss Ida Johnston, reasurer. Plans for an entertainment to be riven the sister freshmen were dis :ussed, but it was decided to post one it until the regular opening iestiv'ties have subsided. -U.s.c. MARGARET GUNTER Miss Margaret Guignard Gunter, a Carolina student, died early Monday, september, 13, at the Baptist Hospital, ifter an illness of several months. Miss Gunter was born in Beaufort September 11, 1906, twenty years ago ast Saturday. The early years of her ife were spent in Beaufort, Columbia, tnd Greenville. She attended High school in Columbia, being a graduate >f the class of 1924. She would have entered her third rear at the University this semester. Always having taken an active part in - [Jniversity affairs, she will be greatly niissed by the faculty and studenN~ dike. Miss Gunter was a member of he Euphrosynean Literary society, the Wauchope club, S'carat can club, and vas also an active worker 'r the Y.W. 2.A. Her father, the late Lueco Guinter, w~as a well known educator of South Carolina. Her mother, a brother and t sister survive. Funeral services were id Tuesday afternoon at Trinity E~piscopal Church, being conducted by ier pastor, Rev. Henry D. Phillips . A.lan McCutcheou Elected to Honors Son of University Professor on Cross Country Team at Military Academy Allan McCutcheon, son of Professor 3eorge McCutcheon of the University facblt'y, and at one time himself in chool hire, has been elected to the ross-country team of the United States 4ilitary Academy at West Point, where s a third year man, according to in 'ormation received from the war de )artment. The young cadet is a graduate of olumbia high school, where he made in enviale record. He was active in )oy scout work. He entered the Uni rersity of South Carolina ifthe fall of 1923, and completed the freshman class ut entered the military academy in 924. Since being there he has con lucted himself in a distinguished mad ier. Last year he was elected to the ross-country team and to the Howitzer )oard. This year he is a corporal as well as being on the cross-country eam. He is fifteenth honor man of is class of several hundred students. Eie was one of the eighteen men named to teach in the post Sunday school, an inusual honor. In other forms of ictivities he has commended himself. - U.s.c. - Pete says that the funniest thing he ;aw in Georgia this summer was a hen ;itting on' an axe trying to hatchet. - U.S.C. - Minerva, the goddess of wisdom, never married.
