GAMECOCI CAROLINA .OPE TOMORROI ERSKINE IS OPPONENT Visitors Have Best Team in Sev eral Years-Held Clemson to 7-0 Score The teams will line up tomorrow at three-thirty promptly. All stu dent s must bring their athletic tickets or else will not be admitted to the contest. The officials are Burns (Idaho), and Osborn (Wof ford and South Carolina). Tomorfow comes Saturday-and with it the Erskine Seceders. From the f Due West encampment comes news l that the little college has a stronger I team than has hitherto even been im agined. The Clemson Tiger almost I spent himself in a mighty effort to con quer the Seceder last Saturday, and I only did so, after Herculean work in J the closing minutes of the contest. I Thl game points to the fact that Ers kine has a very strong team or that - Clemson is putting out a very weak machine. The latter surmise is unlike ly, because early season dope gave Clemson credit for having a much bet ter team than was on the field last year. Although tomorrow is the day for the inital contest to be staged Vn Ca rolina's magnificent new athletic field, it is not the occasion for the official dedicational exercises. This is to be reserved until the following Saturday, when the University of Maryland comes to play Carolina for the first time. Notwithstanding, the game will be a gala affair. Those who have not seen the new gridiron yet, will get the surprise of their lifes. Tier after tier of sections rise high in the air, the topmost seats seemingly reaching up to mingle with the horizon. Bleachers inclose the field on three sides. A repitition of the Harvard stadium, one might say. A wire fence incloses the playing field, which is covered with wire grass, and is as level and regular as a billiard table. Echols, end, and Williams tackle, are considered to be real threats. "Dode" Phillips is bringing a real team to Columbia this year. There is a good- r< sized chance that "Dode" Phillips s< has dug up a team out of this e "pint size" college that can harass s even the mighty Gamecock. The spirit of the Erskine student body" is wonderful. It is the hardlest thing in the world to cheer a los ing team, but the Seceders al ways fight. T IS A SHOCK to learn that Power Rogers will probably be out of the game Saturday. However, it is not definitely known whether he will '1 be out or not. Rogers has been sick this summer, and has develop ed a sore knee since practice started. 'Burnett Stoney heads the coaching >ster of the Freshman team. Stoney an old Carolina man and has the stitution at heart. Last year was s first here, and his Biddie eleven :pt up the "rep." Assisting him are alder Seibels, of Columbia, a rmer Yale man, "Alec" Murdaugh, amecock tackle of two years ago, ho is unable to play on account of juries, and Waring, an old Carolina an who came in to help Stoney last eek. With these men at the head of ings, Carolina has no alibi for a bad ason on account of insufficient di ct ion. They are men who have the aditions, and ideals of Carolina with iem on the field and off. The morale F the squad is excellent. Phillips is probably the great est player South Carolina ever prodluced. HE SECEDER'S brightest star is Derril Pratt. He played a mag nificent game last year. Trhis Titan haired "wild man" must be watched. He weighs about 160 pounds, and is a veritable "streak" in a broken field.
