Gamecocks Prepare for Hard Cos Season (Coitinued from iPaye One) Both Varsity tackles of last yeai cJ graduated, but Shag Simmons, a goo &S natured lad from the "City by th , Sea," will likely land his place, a will Blake Edmunds, who did auxil ary work last year. However, bot) of these men will have to show ;om speed to outdistance others who wil bid for their places and to ':op4 with the All-State material met ii the big games. The guards also wil have to be developed, "Buddy" Mc Kee, who played some last year, anc loomed up big in the Centre game Is the only man coming over frort the scrub-varsity, he needs moro training and will find the goinj hard against the ex-freshmen. It was a shock to many Carolini -men to learn that Jo Wheeler wil not return. One of the best tribute ever paid him was by the late "Tiny Maxwell, who had seen the brightes stars in the country, when he sab that the elected leader of this year, team was one of the best centers i had ever seen in action. "Jo" wa looked upon a "Rock of Gibralter and a ne4v man must be broken ii1 iBesides this a new captain must b elected. On top of this came th4 news that "Bob" Waite, brother t< Alex, and center of last years Statq Champ Freshmen, will attend thi University of Texas this yeai L. E. Kirvin, former sta center for P. C., is the only man i1 the Carolina camp who has had an: experience as a center. Some fei expre4s a doubt as to whether hi will be eligible to play for U. S.( this year, if he does play there wil be little to worry about, but if th Southern Intercollegiate Conferenci should do thle unexpected aid sud denly rule him ineligible, Metzgei will have one of his hardest inut to crack in finding and building i new center out of raw material Henry Bartelle, of last years Fres1h has been tried out in the pre-seasoi training period. Rhame is a nice interference runner, although not a star on car rying the ball himself. Sizemore is a shifty, sidestepping safety man; Tom Brice has not had a chance to display his mettle, although it should be remembered that in the Furman game he made a forty-yard run in about four seconds flat. Holland is a "pinch hitter" in the backfileld, when a few yards are needed "Daddy Bill" gets it somehow, through, over or under. "Al" Ambs, the New Jer sey sensation of the Gamecocks, a twisting, whirling tornado, is again to be with us, and he is surely head ed toward an All-Southern berth. Besides these there are many men on last years scru'bs who should 11Imake the men work the limit. The Quarterback. Here is the problem, the real ques tion of any team, and the offensive 3 strength thereof lies in the hands of his honor, the quarter, who be t side being first a born football player, must be a quick thinking, fast act ing, determined field general, speedy to see and take advantage of his op ponents apparent weakness. Metzger has about seven applicants for this position, led by Parler, last years quarter who should make a strong bid to retain his place. Boat wright, Jeffords and DeLorime of the freshmen will mnahe an effort to oust him, as will Lillard and Rhame, Kirven will have, in all probability, r to play in the center of the line. All of these men- are said to possess good qualities in varying degrees (and any or all of them may be seen in the(! coveted position early in the season, but on the other hand, Coach may pick some "dark horse" inreto fore unheard of. Freshmen Supply Material. The main bulwark of strength will come over from last years State Champion freshman team, all of whom will be eligible for the 1923 varsity. This source will supply much material; besides those already men tioned are: For end, Joe Lillard, a long, lanky Columbian. whose chief I delight is to reach into the broad open places to yank out passes, both FRE Welco S already I [NANTS, BAI y a line of goods fo SCarolina Seal) Re] r Laundry umbia Laundr' Ca: :irst. Seeking places as guards are Henry Hartelle, for two years a Carolinaian about as solid as a stone wall, Ar thuri' "Sarg" Dukes, of Orangeburg fame. and Bob Guntert another de pendable man. The former fresh man- center. Bob Waite, has hit the long Ind dusty and is now attending the State University of the Single Star. Great hopes are pinned to the in coming backfield men, including P. J. Boatwright. fresh captain and quar ter, Walter Jascewicz. of Newark, New Jersey, a vertible juggernaut. who possesses an educated toe. Lit tle Bill Jeffords is the fullback whose chief delight is passing the ball all over the lot. Jack Wright. a tow healed, hard hitting half requires the whole line to stop him. John Dukes easily compares with the stand ard of the team. Eddie Holcombe is an ex-bantam and still knows all the football Prause taught him in Charles ton. William Swink is a"sweet Wil liam" all right when it comes to running with the ball. Up to the S. 1. C. As has already been stated, J. L. "Jumbo" Grambling, who for three years starred with the Citadel mak ing the All-State, will have to have his statue decided by S. 1. C. The ianager for the season is W. If. Ioatwright of Darlington, an assistant to Bob Kern last year. The Coachus are the same as last year, Sol Aletzger, head Coach. Dr. Bruce "Red" Edgerton, assistant, and 11ey ward Brockington, freshman Coach and assistant in the liine. The play ing schedule Is looked upon as a source of concern. None of the teams are regarded as "set-ups" and too, the most feared rivals come inI a row.
