Y. M. C. A. NEWS "Spirit, blind, Rody." The second number in the series of life work addresses was deliv ered on Wednesday night by Mr. Beverly Herbert on "Law as a Life Work." The speaker began by saying that he did not wish to eulogize the legal profession, but that there are always two sides to everything, and that usually only the bright side of the legal profession is pictured in fiction. Because of this there is often an errotic idea that it is very easy to succeed in law and no man should choose law as his profession un less he feels that he possesses the necessary qualifications. The speaker then gave three points that success as a lawyer depends upon: (1) Preparation - There is a tendency to rush thru prepara tion, especially in the South. He emphasized a proper founda tion as of greatest importance and that the majority of young lawyers begin practice without being prepared for it. He said that most young men have to wait six or eight years before getting started and that if part of this time was spent in higher colleges it would be much to their advantage. (2) Industry - No real success can be achieved unless at man is willing to do some hard work. (3) Character - There is an eroneous idea afoot that all law yers have to compromise them selves with their conscience at sometime in their practice. Mr. Herbert called attention to the fact that it was not the lawyer's business to judge whether his side of the case was right or wrong, but his duty was to put the case forward in the best light for the defendant. The speaker concluded by say ing that there is a chance for a lawyer to reach the topmost round in the ladder of fame and of civilization. There is also a chance to measure up to the full work of manhood, and room to fully display one's character and tidents in the legal profession. and South Carolina needs lawyers of the highest type.
