CO-ED DEPARTMENT Editor, Mis Minua Loe. Miss Henrietta Covington had visiting her last week at the co ed dormitory Miss Sadie Mayes of Mayesville, S. C. Miss Mayes is a member of the class gradu ating last year from the College for Women. On last Saturday evening Miss Elizabeth Ayer enjoyed a birth day supper. Her life candle shed its tiny rays on those as sembled throughout the eating of the birthday cakes and gave an unflickering promise of a long life. Not until all the wick was gone did the little flame fade. Letter From Dr. Joynes. Editor of THE GAMECOCK: c,, I read with great interest 6 in THE GAMECOCK that the Uni 2 versity Summer School will offer a special course in Spanish and on Spanish America. May I o take occasion, through THE GAMECOCK, to express the hope that this course will be largely attended. It has long been my opinion and is now more than ever that from a practical point of view Spanish is the most impor tant to American students of all the modern languages. This opinion was expressed to me by no less a personage than General Robert E. Lee, as long ago as 1866, wheh I first became pro fessor of modern languages in the then Washington College, of which he was president; and subsequent events have greatly increased the value of Spanish scholarship. The lack of it is one great reason why our trade and our influence in Spanish America lag so far behind those of other nations. That is now the greatest field for American interprise, which, however, can hardly be successful without some knowledge of the Spanish language. Our University offers con stantly excellant instruction in Spanish, but the classes are and have always been-regreta bly small. Let me hope that this may not always be the case, and that the proposed summer course may stimulate interest in this beautiful and valuable language, EDWARD S. JOYNES. May 10, 1915. To Hold Spelling Contest. Dr. Currell will conduct the spelling notch to be held by the Free Kindergarten Associaton on the 21st. Dr. Chamberlayne and Wmn. Elliot of the city will act as the captains. This match is held for the benefit of the asso ciation. It will probably be held in the First Baptist Church. The admission will be 25 cents. PROHIBITION CLUB AT BAPTIST CHURCH Bolt and Merrimon Speak Be fore a Large Audience. On last Sunday evening the services at the First Baptist Church were turned over by the pastor, C. E, Burts, to the ""Fly ing Squadron" , of the Univer sity of South Carolina. J. E. Bolt and A. E. Merrimon were chosen as speakers. Mr. Bolt was the first speaker, whose subjuct was, "The Reign of John Barleycorn." Merrimon had as his theme, "It Can't be Done." The church was filled to its greatest capacity. This was the biggest meeting the club has given. There is a considerable amount of interest shown in the work that the flying squadron is under taking. The prohibition clubis receiving almost daily invitations for speakers to come to various churches in the city. Other speeches made last Sunday were made by W. J. Scott and O. F. Crow at the Christian Endeavor at the First Presbyterian Church. T. T. Carroll and W. C. Mann spoke at Cayce. Tne club has given a number of programs before different or ganizations in the city and each has been well attended. The people of Columbia have shown a great interest in the endeav ors of the students and have manifested sympathy for the prohibition movement. Class Exercises. At a joint meeting of the two senior classes the following men were appointed to arrange the program for the class day exer cises: J. G. Dinkins and W. A. Hartz, form the law class; H. 0. Hanna and H. E. Danner, from the academic department. The class exercises are usually very interesting. They will be held on Tuesday morning of commencement week. The pro fessors are often the victims of the jokers. Y. M. C. A. The Y. M. C. A. did not have its regular meeting on last Wednesday night, because of the Chautauqua musical and lecture, held on Davis Field, which com menced at the hour scheduled for the weekly service. The Last Crow. With this issue the shrill crow of the bird is heard for the last time this session. THE GAME COCK will plume himself and re tire for rest.
