Life wat not extinct when help first reached him, bat he gasped for breath for a few DO cents only before bis heart ceased to beat and his tool bad taken its flight to appear before the God who created it.' No definite reason is assigned for the sui* cide, bot despondency is generally believed to have been the came. Be bad lived io the most abject poverty for several years and be and bis family, consisting of a wife aod five children, have been supported largely by tbe charity of those who were acquainted with their necessitous coodition. Thomas S. Drayton came of an illustroos line, being a desrendaot, in direct line, of William Henry Drayton, the Revolutionary patriot, and John Drayton, Governor of South Carolina in 1800, and author of tbe well known books, "Memoirs of the Revolu? tion in South Carolina" and "A View of South Carolina " Be wa9 a native of Sum? ter County and was about forty-five years of age Bis early life wa? spent on a farm near May es vi lie and be was a successful and pro? gressive farmer for a number of years ; but meeting with reverses, be removed to this city and was a member of tbe police force for sev? eral years. L Wright's bicycle was stolen from the front of Barby k Co's office, on the Coort Honse square, by Johnny Brown, colored, an ex-cb?in gang convict, who had recently been discharged after serving out bis sentence Mr. Wright has beeo in the habit of leaving bis wheel lean tog against tbe front of the office and bad no idea that anyone would have the boldness to steal it from undr bis very nose, as it were. The wheel was not missed nntil Mr Wright was ready to go home and then there was no trace of tbe wheel He notified the police of the theft and asked them to be oo tbe lookout for it. Tbe police did sot succeed in capturing the thief, but tbe porter of Levy k Hoses found tbe negro with the wheel, took possession of it and re? turned it to Mr. Wright The thief bas thus far escaped arrest, but the police io neighbor? ing towns have been notified and furnished with a ?escription of the thief, and be will probably be put back on tbe chain gang.
