?-? RELIGION, MORALS AND PHILOSOPHY. _1__ Rev. C. C. BROWN, Editor. lEBECIOUS OINTMENT. Do not keep your bos of ointment, Break iVo'er your friends to-day ; Do-not keep it in the darkness, ~ Half forgotten, laid away. Little deeds of love and kindness, .-Don't forget to give them now; Don't forget to smooth the pillow? ..\ Bon'tforget to bathe the brow. . Send your flowers to the living, Do not keep them for the grave? - They may comfort some poor mourner, They may strengthen, help, and save. Send them in their fragrant beauty? Show your friendship true and warm, What would care a rosewood casket ? " : What would care a lifeless form ? Hearts there are with burdens laden, ~ Bearing bravely toil and care; ' E?dy to receive your kindness _ Sboald yoa leave your ointment there. - ^ Don't forget the kindly counsel? . Don't forget the loving tone; They will make the cross seem lighter :>:. -To seme sorrow-laden one. All along life's rugged pathway ' Stretch your hand and lift your voice, ^ bringing all yonr love and kindness, 1 ~* making every heart rejoice. Seeping your ointment ever ready? Use it freely?there is room, Jt will bring you richest blessings, Smooth your passage to the tomb. Do You Pray, ^ , . Abraham did. And God gave him an heir in whom all the nations should be blessed; and promised to his de scendants the land of Canaan. I would have spared even Sodom at' his V ^request, had there been but ten right eous men in it; and made him the honored founder of a mighty na tion and an ancestor of the great Mes nan. Jacob did. And as a prince he had jwower with God and prevailed; and was blessed by him at Peniel; and again at Padan Aram; and ras spared through the famine ; and richly blessed in his person, his family and his de scendants through all the Jewish na tion. Moses did. And God made him the deliverer of his people, to lead them * out of bondage in Egypt, and conduct -them through the opening sea and to the very borders of the promised -land, and to give them his law and his ordi nances ; and when his end was come, buried him with his own hand in the Valley? after he had died upon the mount. * Joshua cUd. And he was permitted to go into the promised land and possess H, and overthrow the enemies of his people, and establish them as a na tion in their promised possession. ikevid did. And though the cares of a kingdom pressed upon him, he ?tili found time for communion with God, and has left us in the Psalms the .^j??hest. treasury of-devotion that the % world has ever seen. LTezeJciah did. And his life was pro longed for fifteen years; and the Assy rians were destroyed, a hundred and fifty thousand of them in a single night; and the Babylonish captivity was de cayed till he- had gone to his rest. Daniel did. And though the noble of Babylon censpired for his ruin, God kept him in safety, and closed the .-. mouths of the lions that he should not -no injured, and gave him the highest honors of the kingdom. Paul did. And it was the first pulsation of his. new Hfe in Chri*i Jesus. .Behold, he prayeth,' was the mark, divinely given, of his conversion and dbctpleship: from his being the bitter persecutor of the saints to being a saint himself. And his life of prayer led him is a life of labor for his countrymen, for the-Gen tiles, for the Church of Christ, "fill at last bis prayers were merged in the endless praises of heaven. Our Lotd Jesus Christ did. And we should never forget it. Though himself perfect and divine, with no sins to be pardoned, no evil passions to be subdued, no temptations that he could not resist, no weakness that be couM not overcome, no enemies that he could not conquer, still, as a man, he prayed. In the desert, in the garden, on the deep, by the wayside, by himself with his disciples, and on the cross, he pray ed. And his prayers were heard and answered, in blessings on his followers, and the Church, and a dying but ransomed world. With such examples, and with such blessed results in view, do you pray ? With all the commands and encourage ments and promises to prayer, do yon pray? Do you ask, when God has said yon shall receive ? Do you seek, when be has promised you shall find ? Do you knock, when he has declared it shall be opened unto you ? When he has said he is more willing to grant his Holy Spirit to them that ask -it than earthly parents are to give good gifts to their children, do you come and ask that you may receive that Spirit and so live for ever? With all these en couragements and promises in view, Do yoa pray ??Am. Messenger. -.? i ii fc? Well Built Cnristians. A well built Christian is harmonious in all his parts. No one trait shames another. He is not a jumble of incon sistencies?to-day liberal to one cause, to-morrow niggardly toward another; to-day fluent in prayer and to-morrow J fluent in polite falsehoods. He does not keep the fourth commandment on Sunday and break the eighth on Moo -day. He does not shirk an honest debt to make a huge donation. He is not [ in favor of temperance for otber folk j and a glass of toddy himself. Me doc s not exhort or pray at each of the few j meetings be attends to make up arrear age* for the meetings which he ne gleets. He does not consume his spir- i itual fuel during revival seasons that he is as cold as Nova Zembla duriog all the rest of the time. "Now let me tell you a secret?a >e cret worth knowing* Tui^ looking for- j ward to enjoyment don't pay. From j what I know of it, I would as soon j ehase butterflies for a living or bottle np moonshine for cloudy nights. The 1 only true way to be happy is to take I the drops of happiness as God gives j them to us every day of our lives. The : boy must learn to be happy while plod- j ding over his lessons; the apprentice i while he is learning his trade; the iner- j ?haut while he is making bis fortune. If he fails to learn this art, he will be j aure to miss his enjoyment when he \ gains what he has sighed for. 1 Grains. Dr<:og is bc-ter thao saving. Great thoughts originate from a good heart. A Christian is the highest style of man. Respect old age and bear with its in firmities. Children are ruled easier by love than by force. The qualities we possess never make us so ridiculous as those we preteud to have. No principle is more noble, as there is none more holy, than that of true obedience. Religious principles inculcated in a child's heart are like golden nails which time drives in fa6t and no philo sophical claw can completely draw out. The truly great stand upright, as columns of the temple whose dome covers all; against pillared sides mul titudes lean, at whose base they kueel in times of trouble. Christian living and Christian char acter without Christ are impossibilities; with Christ they have been made a reality, before which the wovld has ever offered the homage of its admira tion and respect. It is one of the highest tributes to music that religion can use it. It is one of the highest proofs that religion brings joy into the heart that when men have found God they want to sing. It is no slight authentication of our Lord that the angels sang at his birth God will require an account of your life. Do not be content with those virtues which consist merely iu not doing evil. It is your duty to enter the list, to love your brothers, to en lighten and console them, to lead them from vice- and error, and to bring them to God. That is life, and that is man. You pray God to save your children ; but do you try to train them for a re ligious life? If not, you are like the man who plants no seed and ploughs no soil, and yet asks for a bountiful har vest. Bring up your children to know God, to love God, and to fear God, and then ask the Holy Spirit to perform his work in them. 'For whatsoever a man soweth*?in the heart of his child? 'that shall he also reap.' w///////////^afA Bne B^S Disease is an effect, not a cause. Iis origin is within; its manifestations without. Hence, to cure the the disease the cause must be re moved, ?nd in no other wav can a cure ever be effected. WARNERS" SAFE KIDNEY AND LIVER CURE is established on just this principle. It realizes that 95 Per Cent. of all diseases arise from deranged kidneys aiid liver, and it strikes at once at the root of the difficulty. The elements of which it is composed act directly upon these great organs, both as st food and restorer, and, ly placing them in a healthy condition, drive disease aud pain from the system. For the innumerable troubles caused by un healthy Kidneys, Liver aud Urinary Organr; for the distiessing Disorders of Women; for Malaria, aud for physical derangements gen erally, this great remedy has no equal. He ware of i in posters, imitations aud concoctions said to be just as good. For Diabetes, ask for WARNER'S SAFE DIABETES CURE. , For sale by all dealers. H. H. WARNER & CO.. Rochester, N. Y. Old fashionable remedies are rapidly giving ground before the advance oi this conquering specific, and old fashioned ideas in regard to depletion as a means of cure, have been quite exploded by the success of the great renovaat which tones the system, tranquilizes the nerves, neu tralizes malaria, depurates and enriches the blood, rouses the liver when dormant, and promotes a regular habit of body. In miasmatic dis tricts, the rapid pulse, coated tongue; tlarsV lassitude, loss of appetite, pain in. the back and loins, and coldness of the spine and extremities, are only, premonitions of severer symptoms, which terminate in the' ague paroxysm, succeeded by high fever and profuse perspiration. It is a startling fact, that quinine, arse nic and other poisonous minerals, form they] basis o? most of the "Fever and Ague 1 Preparations," "Specifics," "Syrups/- and "Tonics," in the market The prepara tions made from these mineral poisons, altuough they aro palatable, and may break the chill, do not cure, but leave the. malarial and their own drug poison in the system, producing quinism, dizziness, rmging in the ears, headache, vertigo, and other "disorders more formidable 'than the disease they were intended to euro. Ayek's Ague CtntE thoroughly eradicates. , these noxious poisons from the system, _J and always cures the severest cases. If- ' contains no ouinine, mineral, or any thing that could injure the most delicate pa tient; and its crowning excellence, above its certainty to cttre, is that it leaves the system as free from disease as before the, attack. For Liver Complaints, Ater's Acctb Cuke, by direct action on the liver and biliary apparatus, drives out the poisons which produce these complaints, and stim ulates the system to a vigorous, healthy condition. We warrant it when taken according to directions. Prepared by Dr. J. C. Ayer & QOm^i Practical and Analydca^ittaHl^, " ~ , ? LoWeu,- Mass. , . SOLD ST ALL l>ItCCGIST? EVKKTWBZBX. ?
