Mulligan, Charleston?Factor and Ccmmission Merchant. G- Richardson, Master?Sales ander orders of Court. W? hare received no Charleston paper since Saturday. What is the matter? Ber. D. X. Lafar, of Charleston is in town. HeSlIed-tbe pulpit of the Presbyterian Church on Sun lay. Col. T. V. Walsh is still afflicted with Rheumatism and on that account unable to att end to the business of his office. It may be a consoling tact to some to know that our "devil" is sick and onable to do his osuai work.^ We w??-n those who value their personal safety, against asking our Clerk of Court, I 'fWhat is the matter." The public road is in a bad condition near . the old site of Dingle's Mill. Unless repaired very soon it "will be impassable. A, vigorous communication from "A Hater of Rom" appears elsewhere in our columns. Messrs. Bultmaun & Bro. have a handsome front to their new store. Messrs. Keys & Ard ' have reflected credit upon their artistic skill in the work displayed. School Commissioner Rbame is in town, and was busy all day yesterday . signing pay checks.. Attention is called to the new advertise ment of A. B. Mulligan of Charleston, who is prepared to make advancements on cotton. See It in another column. Dr. AuTd, has for sale a lot of the Sectional Checker Board Puzzles. If you want some thing that will keep you awake at night, get one. A, change of schedule on the Central and N.E. Rail Roads went into effect on yester day. The time table may be seen in another column. The election to-day seems to be passing off quietly without any excitement. Lee is re ported considerably ahead of Mackey at tbe .Sumter box, and the straight Democratic tick et for State and Gounty officers, the one which ^Toted by the majority. The colored voters lously' absent at tbe State and negro, while riding a horse at speed on San day, near the edge the animal to run into a s neck. We learn that it \ iwas the property oXMxs-?J<^frEpperson. "-' A lively war is about to be commenced be tweeu the Town Council and the Doctors of Sumter- The.latter have refused to pay what they regard a& unlawful tax, and tbe Cooucil has levied upon their buggies. Gar field's ex perience with six Doctor's does not seem to have increased the timidity of our Council, who will doubtless receive belter treatment. The election ordered by the Town Council ! to decide tbe matter of granting licenses for . the sale of spirituous liquors within tbe cor | porated limits, will be held on tbe first Tues | day in December. The managers of the elec i tioc are Messrs. Jno. H. Eberhardt, F. F. [ Teicher and J. T. Edwards. > % **Tbe Newspaper Press of Charleston," is ..the title of a popular volume by Wm. L. : King, of Charleston. S. C, which has recently undergone a second edition. It is a very eu | tertainTng book, and filled with interesting j- facts concfruing the men and events connect ed with the dry'and its contemporaneous his tory. Much of the information, which it con tains is unpublished elsewhere, except in tbe j files of nearly forgot ton newspapers, and might bare been lost had they not been gathered by Mr. King in this little book. It will be valued by none so highly as those who love the "city f. by the sea," and especially the frieuds of the f "stick and rule," whose history, as its title [ Indicates, is the chief object of the work. If it has any defect, it consists in the lavish and indiscriminate praise of all who are men . tioned?ac error which indicates the kind spirit of the author and those from whom he quotes._ ' _ An Accident. On last Sunday Mr. Frank Ridgil! was dri I Ting a buggy containing two of Mr. R. A. I Ridgili's daughters and two of Mr. Stukes' \ daughters across the dam at Tindal's Mill. [. The mule became freightened at a broken b place in tbe bridge at che floodgate, and in :. the effort to turn around, threw the buggy in to tbe pond and fell in too. The water was ; I deep at this point, and it was with difficulty that Mr. Ridgill rescued the ladies. The mole broke loose from the buggy and swam ; directly up stream for a quarter of a pile. When caught it was badly hurt.?Clarendon t Enterprise, Nov. 3rd. Seal Estate Transfers Filed iu Register's office from May 10th, to June 22, 1882 : s R. W. DuRant to Mary E. [From our Correspondent.] Clarbkdon Couxty, S. C- Oct. 30, 1882. Fair?pleasant?Had a light frost. Cora, peas and "taters," fine. Cotton somewhat short. There is a gentleman living in the Santee section, who has gathered 25 bales (regula tion weight,) of cotton to the horse, and a plenty of com besides. If any one doubt3 this statement, let them go there. His hospi tality is more extensive than his broad, rich acres. Politics and candidates, are "tearing aronnd lively." Tbe G. B's are, like the prayers over Sir J. Moore, "few and short." They arejpsachexical set, and remind one of tbe Cartbagenians?(Pu-ni-cusses, you know.) The "Rads," genuine, and gingerbread Afri can, had a convention at Manning on Friday and Saturday. If there are white Radicals here, they took no part in the Convention. Syfax Milton was nominated for the Legisla ture (lower house.) No one nominated for Senate; Butler Prince for School Commis sioner ; G. W. Gaymoo for County Commis sioner : Sessions Boyd for Coroner. Brogdon & Bro., of Sumter County, have bought the still and fixtures at Margni, from Mr. I. C. Ingram. Mr. I. will conduct a large business in Clinch Co., Georgia. Mr. Jeff Land, and B. DuPre Hodge go with him. Boyle & Co., are running Mill No 2. on the Lawrence place. "Billy" Epperson, near "Dudley's," is doing a fine bnsiness in lumber. Cook is keeping "bachlor's hall" near the same place, and ships shingles by the car load. "Doc" Bradham will soon put his mill on tbe road, at AHsbrook's. Things are lively with us. Manning looks like a city, at night. Messrs. Legg & Bell, furnish safe and easy transportation to and from depot. They also keep a first class livery and sale stable. J. M. Bagnal provides bed and board at the "Central." He is a clever old Reb, and knows bow to "do the handsome" by his guests. "We have lots of other good things in and around Manning. Come and see us. Long life to you. If j'our " Watchman" should ever cease to be a "Vindicator" of "Southron" rights, or your "spirit" fails you, just ''advance" into our camp?we have the "Enterprise" to assist you. Blackwood's Magazine for October, repub li.hed by the Leonard Scott Publishing Co. 41 Barclay St., N. Y., contains as follows: Adolpbus: A Comedy of Affinites, Tunis. The Ladies Lindores, Part VII. In the Bri tish Museum. The Erskioes and their Kins folk. Nottingham Lace; its History and | Manufacture. Urbs Roma Vale J Part II. By ! J. P. M. Tbe Story of James Barker: A tale of the Congo Coast. The Situation in Egypt. Perhaps the roost interesting article is the account of tbe manufacture of Nottingham laces work that was started on a hosiery frame, and by degress has been brought to such perfection that even experts are some times puzzled to distinguish it from that made by band. Tbe two book reviews are also very pleasant reading. That on "Tunis" de scribes "the French Conquest of tbe Regency," and gives many quotations from Mr. Broad lev's work. The other is an account of Henry J ErskiDe, Lord Advocate of Scotland and his brothers David, Earl of Buchan and Thomas, Lord Chancellor, all "rich in talent, origi nality and eccentricity. Besides the serial, there is a Comedy that is rather amusing, "James Barker," a sort of "penny dread;ul ;"aud "In the British Muse um" a warning to philosophers. Tbe Egyp tian situation is something like a game of consequeuces, a tribute to Sir Garnet Wolse ley, a discussion ot Mr. Gladstone's sins of omission and commUsion, and. what is to be the end of it all ? Peterson's Magazine for December is on our table; as usual, ahead of all others. It is one of tbe most elegant issues of this, the cheapest and best of the lady's books. The number contains a Supplement, -with a full size dress-pattern, and numerous patterns in embroidery. Then there are some fifty other engravings : of fashions, work-table patterns, etc. Tbe very best stories are always tobe found in "Peterson." Tbe price of the Maga zine is but Two Dollars a year. To clubs, it is astonishingly low, viz: six copies for nine dollars, with an extra copy to the person get ting up the club ; or seven copies for ten dol lars and a half, with both an extra copy and the large-size premium steel-engraving, "Christ Before Pilate," or a Photograph, or Illustrated, Album, gilt, to tbe person getting up the club.
