DEATH OF 1 H. M. AYER. EDITOR OF FLORENCE TIMES EXPIRES SUDDENLY--HIS BRILLIANT CAREER IN JOURNALISIM, ETC. , Florence,September 13:?This city ; was shocked tonight when the news passed out from the home of Hartwell Moore Ayer, editor of the Flor-^ ence Daily Times, had died without a moment's warning. He had been J ( at his office all day in connection j J with his duties as editor and pub-! | fisher of the Times and had reached i J his home only a few minutes prior! i to being stricken. He attempted to! 1"? A i7or I j reply to a question irum iUk o nj v? | | and in a half dazed manner dropped I over in the chair in which he sat be-1 side the fire and without being able i to speak coherently passed away. Hartwell Moore Ayer was a son j of the late Gen Lewis Malone Ayer I of old Barnwell county, who was a, member of both the United States and the Confederate Congress. He was educated in the common schools | nf Ramwell county and under the J tutorship of his learned father. He I attended the South Carolina college, from which he was graduated in the | class of 1887. He later went into newspaper work and for a time was | connected with the Charleston World, later with the Charleston Sun. He | was telegraph editor of the Columbus Enquirer-Sun and the Savannah Morning News.SComing to Florence, he purchased the Times from Dr C H Prince. He continued the publica- , tion of this paper for several years, I until he organized and became the founder of the Charleston Evening Post. Later he returned to Florence and resumed the editorship of the Times and the Daily Times. He 1 Ki Ck I built the limos duuuuik. ?v recently sold. No single instrument of destruction is playing a more vital role in the present war than the machine gun. To deprive Germany of this weapon by offsetting its effect is the purpose of an inventor who has developed a bullet-proof fighting shield that is perhaps worthy of study. The device is a wedge-shaped steel shelter mounted on one front and ' 5 tn on. two rear wneejs anu iuicuucu w commodate 10 infantrymen. The shield is designed to be folded flat and carried through the communication trenches to the firing line, where it could be assembled quickly under cover of darkness, ready to protect Sammies, Tommies, and Poilus during an early morning advance across "No Man's Land." Five Bottles of Cardui Made Her WeD. Kathleen, Fla.?Mrs. Dallas Prine, of this place, says: "After the birth of my last child...I got very much run-down and weakened, so much that I could hardly do anything at all. I was so awfully nervous that I could scarcely endure the least noise. My condition was getting worse all the time... I knew I must have some relief or I would soon be in the bed and in a serious condition for I felt so badly and was so nervous and weak I could hardly live. My husband asked Dr. about nay taking Cardul. He eald, 'It's a good medicine, and good for that trouble', so he got me 5 bottles... After about the second bottle I felt greatly Improved.. .before taking it my limbs and hands and arms would go to sleep. After taking it, however, this poor circulation disappeared. My strength came back to me and I was soon on the road to health. After the use of about 5 bottles, I could do all my house-work and attend to my six children besides." You can feel safe In giving Cardul a thorough trial for your troubles.
