M;>s Marion i> the youngest of three daughters and is a well-educated, refined and splendia lady and one of ? the most popular oi this section, and in being able to secure such . a prize Mr Oliver is regarded is 1 very fortunate. Mr Oliver, who is orginally from Marion, was here about a year in the em-,. ploy of Mr J L btuckey and ^ went into his new business a few v months ago. ; t Mrs S W G IShipp of Florence i v was here last week visiting her c sister, Mrs J M Sturgeon. 1 Q Mr W P Jordan is building a n really pretty cottage on Mc-! e Alister street, next door to the ,, old school house. As soon as a completed he and his family t will occupy it. u Mr 0 S Baldwin spent two i; days last week in Georgetown ( on business. . c There was an entertainment r at the Star warehouse Friday evening for the benefit of the n public school library. It was a a comedy entitled "All Tangled 3 Up" and a good many of the j talented young folks took part n in the production, which was t very creditable and pronounced a quite a success. The returns I were about $50 net. This makes i-' about $150 that has been raised 3 +hr^f? or four months for 1 YVAVUAA-I ?? ? W ? the library and is quite sufficient ? to secure a well-selected col- ^ lection of some two to three n hundred neat and durable books, which should prove a decided n aid in educational efforts. to A few weeks ago mention e ? was made of a fire engine which ^ the town council was contem- c plating purchasing. Howe Fire a Engine Company brought the * engine here and subjected it s publicly to every test required and it met every claim made for r it. Thereupon the council ac- F cepted the engine and other ' equipment and paid for the same e cash. So now we have a thou- a sand dollar engine, hose reel s and wagon and hook and ladder *truck and accessories?all com- a plete in every detail. The en- e gine is a combined chemical and water engine. The chemical is, * of course, intended for hurried 11 use in incipient fires and the ' s Trif.r dntriTip fnr recular hard j ^ v.u.iv.1 - - o , work. Of course it is necessary to furnish a water supply in order to make the department ^ complete. This will put us in v shape to meet any fire that we will probably be called upon to 0 combat and ail will feel that we 1 are no longer in danger of a dis- * astrous conflagration. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound 1 of cure. ^ VV L B. 11 i t Two New Bargains. 1 No?62 179 acres, 25 cleared, 4 ^ room dwelling, barn and stables, 14 miles to P 0, 3 miles to ( ^ rdmrrh- High land. Tlie matter now engaging tin losest attention and that wil vershadow every tiling else un il Thursday of this week, is tin lections, particularly that ol udge of the 3rd circuit, whicl mbraces Williamsburg1 county udge Purdy sent in his resig lation last Wednesday, whicl 5 to take effect September 907. For the unexpired term rhich ends December, 1908 here are two candidates, t< fit: Solicitor John S Wilsoi if Manning and Hon T B Frasei >f Sumter, the latter being 1 tiember of the house of repres ntatatives. Both these are ;ood men and good lawyers anc re very popular and the con est is spirited, the champion? if each being enthusiastic anc ntensely in earnest. Mr Georg< Jalletly of Florence was spokei >f as third candidate, but his lame was withdrawn last week The election will be held tonorrow and the result is keenly hticipated. In the event o ?Ir Wilson's election to th< udgeship, his place as solicitoi nust be filled, and for this posi ion there will be more than on< spirant. Be ides these Messrs Smith of ,'olleton and King of Columbia re candidates. When these lections are over, then look or the hair-pulling and howling hat may be expected at any loment. The three leading ubjects of contention are the nspensary, the lien law anc he railroads. The anti-dispensary forces lave presented their measure rhich is the local option bil irepared by Messrs J P Care] >f Pickens and T P Cothran o Anderson and modeled after tin araous Morgan bill, wnicu i ollows in most essential teat ires. It is too lengthy to re iroduce here, as inasmuch ; nost of your readers are tamil ar with the general scope an< enor of the Morgan bill, the; lave a good idea of this net neasure, which is the local op :ion between prohibition an? :ounty dispensaries, Of cours :he dispensaryites still ham :o the Kajsor-Manning bil Thus the two forces stand ai ayed for battle and that it wil je a battle, all expect. In th louse the issue is certain, but i is in the Senate that the re< :ontest will take place. A certain guest of very self assertive character loudly de' clared that no one could will him m r to do anything against his inclina tion. His challenge was taken up m r by a well known author, who led in L him out into the middle of the room, held his hands and gazed at q ' him steadily for awhile, the rest of q : the company looking on expectant- q f lv. Presently the braggart said: j "What did I tell you, sir? You r may gaze at me as long as ever you ai [ like, but I defy you to will me to ^ do anything." I "Do you ?" replied the author. | er "Well, I've been willing you to jr 5 stand like a jackass in the middle d of this room for five minutes, and, 2 j by George, you've done it!"
