Men have been hanged for forcible resistance to his authority, and it is on record that one Richard Bvfield in the year 147* was fined ?50 for presuming to kneel too close to his lordship at St. Erkenwald's shrine. Most awe inspiring still, the lord mayor once commanded the services of a merry nndrew and a poet laureate. Ben Jonson himself was a lord mayor's laureate, and even his supreme talent was not thought equal to the high duty of singing the praises of the common council, tier must have performed his duties not too graciously, for we know that he wrote a letter complaining of the corporation withdrawing him from their "chandlery pension for verjuice and mustard." Upon which letter a champion of the city made the comment that the pension was i "not so chandlery, for it amounted to ?33 Gs. 8d., a sum which may at least stand comparison with what ? has been at any time allowed other laureates of higher degree." It was much more than was allowed even to the king's laureate in Ben Jont son's days, for until 1630 the pension was hut 100 marks?without a sip of Canary.?London Chronicle. */ ??v v VJIUL/1IJ1 g ReqMr< I Our Sim II 0 ^rSeascaas V We keep the stock in every way O munity. The Capitol, Columbia, Jaau ary zy:?The elevation ot boncitor Wilson to the circuit} bench has already been announced. It is doubtful whether any other election of recent years has been so gratifying to the people of Williamsburg than this one. "Judge" Wilson is a Williamsburger through and through. He has been "stayiug" in Clarendon a little while, but that doesn't alter the case. Messrs Wells and Clayton are the only two avowed candidates, so far, for the solicitorsbip. LeRoy Lee, Esq., has been strongly urged to enter the field, but has nnt vet announred what he will do. MY McLaughlin of Bishopville has been spouen ot, but only in a suggestive way, as a possible candidate. Should Mr Lee not apply, the indications are in favor of Mr Wells. The senate refused to pass the Crouch bill, which purports to repeal the "lien1' law. In fact, it only attempted to repeal the "merchants'" lien and made no effort to do away with chattel mortgages of crops or of landlord's liens for advances. To pass this act would make matters really worse than they are now. The senate by a strict test vote passed tbe.Smith* resolution declaring for the abolition of the State dispensary and local option between prohibition and county dispensaries.
