Sometime In the month of November lost, I commenced taking DR. MILES' HEART CURE and sluco then I havo improved iteadily. At the good roads congress held at Albany last winter (Jen- 1 oral Roy Stone cautioned the 1 wheelmen not to antagonize the 1 farmers if th<\v wished to secure tlie best results. Amonj* other > things he sr.ul : < That good roads will bring pros- t perity is no idle dream. Through < all the panic and depression of 1 the last three years the farmers i in the few good roads districts of 1 the county have gone on making < money and improving their farms, 1 and they have not troubled them- t selves much about politics or ' finance. 1 It is enforced idleness that { makes farmers poor, and no far- I merneed be idle a day on account i of bad weather or wet fields if \ only his roads are good. On a i good road there is always paying : work of some kind, and wet weath- < er is just the time to go 011 the road. The French farmer never < loses a good day in his fields, for 1 he can do all his marketing and < hauling of fertilizers in rainy 1 times. ' What prosperity would burst 1 upon this country it every farmer i and farmer's bov not at school, 1 to and every farm-hand and team 1 J 1 could earn a full day's wages every day in the year, rain or ( shine. , When you have convinced your i neighbors in the cities; and especially those of them who are candidates for public life, that the interests of the city population ( demand that thev shall come to t the relief of the fnrmor? vnn {:o to the farmers with the assu- ' ranee of help and ask them to take into careful consideration the , practical measures by which this ] relief can be brought about, and especially the measures for pro- 1 viding state aid and lor the use of convict labor. It is only through state and country aid that the ci- 1 ties and villages can help. If you find the farmers clinging ' | to the old ways, say to them thatl j I these ways are mainlv an nnfor-l tunato inheritance from (ho mother coni?tiy, which we brought awav with us and failed to shake J oil when the system was aban j doned there, and that to-day in * (ireat Britain not only are the J roads maintained at the general . cost of the people, but govern- ^ ment loans are made for any es- > pecially heavy improvements that are desired. Two hundred years ago the great highways of that country were kept up, so . far as they were kept up at all, . just as they are in this state today, by local taxation, while they [ actually served the people of the j whole kingdom. | Mr*. In nn article in the Indianapo is Journal on "Broad Versus Nar ow Tires'* a writer argues strong y for the former, lie says in part "Without one single dissenting roice the students of road ccoti miics say that the greatest roac lestroyer is the narrow tired wag >n. It cuts like a knife, and, tic natter how carefully the surface s graded and leveled, a rut h jound to follow its use. It finds ivery soft spot and cuts until i Tine reservoir is formed to hol< die rains. On the contrary, tlx vide tire not only keeps grave but also dirt roads smooth and it ;ood condition. The amount o bearing surface presented to tin road prevents any material cut ting, hut, on the contrary, acti is a roller, smoothing out rougl spots and solidifying the smootl jnes. "When tho frost is coming ou :>f the ground in the spring, tin narrow tire gets in its work o cutting the surface and formim ruts to start the season with while the wide tire is in itself i rondmaker, smoothing and pack ing the upheaved surface. Tin wide tire is also easier on tlx team. A much heavier load ma; be hauled with the same powe on wide than on narrow tire over any load in the state out side the larger cities.
