RECEIvING THE' NE*s.---Everybody in Winnsboro was naturally in a most excellent humor dver the good news from Colunbia. And of course people wanted to celebrate their great triumph in some way, so the baud was summoned and quito a largo crowd gathered in front. of the Tpwn Hall. After "Hold the Fort" by the band, loud calls wore made for Major Woodward ; and that gentleman took his position on the front portico of the building. The Major opened his remarks by read ing the correspondence between Chamberlain and Governor Hamp-. ton (published elsewhere), and then read the following telegram which had just been received : "Chamberlain has just turned over the executive department and State house to Governor Hampton's pri vato secretary. It will not he occ'u pied till it has been thoroughly cleaned out." The Major then went on in a speech, which was well received and frequently applauded. Speeches were then made by Col. F. J. Cameron, Mr. Jno. S. Reynolds and Mr. A. M. Mackey, in the order named. The crowd dispersed in great good humor and amid cheers for our governor. Hurrah for Hampton! FAIRFIELD FIRE ENGINE COMPANY. A highly interesting meeting of the above-named organization was hold on Tuesday night last. After the adoption of the Tribute of Rc p.-et to the memory of its late President, Captain Dwight, which is p~ublishedl in this issue, a general discussion was entered into in rogard to the condition of the company and its future prospects. The retirement of able-bodied mombers was severely common ted upon, and pronounced to be not only an act of injustice to the coinpany, but a breach of faith towards the community, to whose lib~erality the organization is in debted for the facilities now in its possession for contending with the fiery elemont. A committee was ap pointed to take into consideration the matters complained of, .and was also charged with the duty of devis ing some means for recruiting the dlepletod ranks of the company. The committee consists of Messrs. J. 3. Neil, James A. Brice and J. 0. McfCants. It was also resolved to give a Hop on the night of the 2nd- of May next, the anniversary of the coms pany, and a 'committee was appoint ed to ibiako all necessary arrange ments.' The 'following named gen. WV. G.'nTiAan'".' I. Nobertson; 5. F, McMastor M:I Iluy, T. H. Kotchin, J. W. Aiken. Cards of admission will be sold, and thme pro ceed1s after paying expenses, which will be only nominal, tm-ned into the treasury of the company. It will doubtless be a successful affair.
