TIGHT WINDOWS - ' SAVE THE FUEL Stopping up cracks around doors and windows is an important factor in cutting down the coal l>ill and keeping the rooms comfortable, according to Farmers' Bulletin 1 liM. Operating a Home Plant, published by the I nited States Department of Agriculture. More fuel invariably is consumed in a house \\Hh loosely fitted windows than in one where ilu cracks are protected. In the v iiKivard room some houses on particularly cold, windy days the leak/ige about window and door framii r will be so great that the rooms cannot be heated to a comfortable temperature, even b\ forcing the furnace to its limit. ci-. n ' 1 ' 1 A " 1 Milaii i raoKs i.n in .much .\ir. Tift'ht-fiUin.u windows, says the bulletin, are essential if leaVajro lo^se* are to I?o kepi down. Ordinary felt weather stripping* helps to reduce this loss. Melai weather stripping; is still ( And wh IF b can get at Safes law office: CON1 V-- i I better ami aids materially in saving fjel. ricsts have demonstrated that it is possible, by the use of metal wenther stripping, t'> reduce by 8S per cent tho leakage through a 1-32inch crack when the wind is blowing fifteen miles an hour and by 83 per cent wlh a thirty-mile wind. The condition of the windows in a building, whether tight, loose, or just loose enough to rattle, plays a very important part not only in the comfort derived ficm a heating plant but mort noticeably in the annual cost of operation. Suitable metal weather stripping frecuentlj reduced by 15 to 20 per cent the radiation required. The prevention of window leakage means a saving of heat and a lessening of dirt blown into the house. In a certain apartment house, says the bulletin, situated near a railroad station in a large city, during he first _/ :a... it? i a.: MtJUNOM UI Its occupaucy me nuauiiK system supplied sufficient heat with a reasonable economy of fuel, but smoke and dust were a nuisance. Metal weather stripping was applied before the next heating season, and as a result the temperature of the rooms was too high. The radiating surface was reduced almost onefourth. uid it still supplied sufficient heat, while the fuel consumption also showed a noticeable reduction. A fuel saving of 15 to 25 per cent 'appears possible by equipping windows and doors with metal stripping. If. therefore, metal stripping is put in when a house is built, it is possible to reduce tho size and cost of the heating plant in proportion to tho redo* fion in radiation surface made possible. The cost of metal wo,at her -tripping may frequently bo ofTset by tho reduction in tho cost of the heating phmt. Copies of the bulletin may bo bad mi>o.i request of the department at Washing!< n D. At the Atlanta meeting of the American Farm Bureau Federation) speakers discussed the marketing of several very difficult products, but it was interesting to see how all of theni came back time after time to the same fundamentals. 1. There must be "commodity marketing." The growers of a single product must unite and emplay a selling organization wholly devoted to the profitable selling of that product. 2. Along with effective selling must go a modern system of storage or warehousing, and accurate grading. 3. A sound system of financing the marketing plan must be worked out. Without such financing an orderly and well-regulated selling of any crop is impossible. 4. The farmer in connection with his marketing system must have bureaus of trained experts who will collect information the world over relating to the supply of and demand for each particular farm product and so help prevent glints. And it was a Texan?Mr. C. O. Moser?who told the memoers ot the American Farm Bureau the stirring story of the campaign for co-operative marketing of cotton in the South. "Our first year finds these associations doing a $50,000,000 for 100.000 members." Mr. Moser decared. "and this is hut a beginning. Simply because we can offer the cotton-buying world cotton accurately graded and stapled in largo quantities (if even running lots, we can get the farmer 2 to 3 cents more a pound for his lint, to say nothing of other advantages. ?Dr. Clarence Poo, in Progressive Farmer.
