BIRTHDAY AND CHRISTMAS DINNER Mr. and Mrs. Claude Kernels was host Sunday to the annual EVERYDAY COUNSELOR By Bishop Herbert Spaagh We climb upward upon the things which we put under our feet. I’ve heard this saying many times, but I’ve never learned the author. The state ment is literally true. We prove it every time we climb steps. By like token, our strength and growth is determined by the resistance we encounter. There fr is one popular form of exercise known as isometrics which con sists of pushing the body in varying positions against tome immobile object. There is a mechanical prin ciple of turning resistance into useful purposes. An example of this is found in modem railroad ing with the diesel locomotive. It is called dynamic braking. In the days the steam loco motive the speed of the train was controlled by air brakes. An air compressor attached to the locomotive forced air back through pipes and connecting hoses between the cars to the last car on the train or to the caboose on a freight train. The engineer controlled the brakes on the entire train from the cab. In additon, each car on the train had a hand brake which could be used in emergencies. The braking on each car is done by metal brake shoes which clamp die outside of the wheels when pressure is applied. The modem diesel locomotive has the same kind of air brakes, but it also has what is known as dynamic braking. It is used quite extensively as a substitute for the air brake, and it is much more economical to operate. In the diesel locomotive an in ternal .combustion engine drives an electric generator which in turn supplies electric power to a traction motor which turns the wheels on the locomotive. These traction motors furnish the pow er which pull a train upgrade and on level ground. While to the average observer railroad track seems to be level, actually it isn’t. It is upgrade or down grade all the time. Power Is needed to pull the train up the .grade, but when it goes down grade there must be some form of braking or the train will run away. In dynamic braking traction motors are converted to dyna mos by a control lever in the engineer’s cab. Like an automo bile going down hill, the car pulls die engine instead of the engine pulling the car. The train pulls the locomotive while the generators put up enough resist- . ance so that very little use of the air brake is neoessary. ; So we become strong in char acter by resisting evfl, hardship trouble, fear, and worry. Our powers of resistance often de termine our desday. St. Paul wrote, "Be not overcome of evil, but overcome with good." In my study Is a small motto given to me by a friend which ' reads, “Be glad you have trou bles. They strengthen diame ter.’’ Christmas of Mrs. Florence Ervin of Au gusta.
