Oct. 10.?A number of! important elections by the next general assembly will be necessary. State Insurance Commissioner F. H. McMaster has stated that he will not be a candidate for reelection. He has taken the position of city editor of the Columbia State, and has entered uponhis duties with that newspaper. There are several candidates already an-' nounced for the office of insurance commissioner. The department was created in 1906, at whi^h time Mr. i McMaster was elected the first com- j missioner, and he has held the office cnntinuouslv since. The act creating w I . the office provides "that no member or the general assembly shall bo eligible to said election nor be elected to the office while a member of either,' branch of th general assembly." Among those who have under con- 1 sideration offering themselves for the office, are Messrs. Sam M. Grist, of York; S. L. Miller, of Columbia, and W. A. McSwain, of Newberry, all well known insurance men. The salary attached to the office is $2,500 per year. The term of State Warehouse Commissioner W. G. Smith, will expire in Xovember, 1918, and it will be necessary for the coming legislature to elect his successor. There has, so far, been no announcements of any candidacy. against Commissioner Smith, who is now filling out the unexpired term of Former Commissioner McLaUr in, Commissioner McLaurin resigned during the session of the general assembly this year;. At that time he had nearly a full term yet to serve. The term of Hon. D. E. Hydrick, a3 associate justice of the supreme court, expires during the coming year, and the legislature of 1918 will elect his successor. The same legislature will also choose successors to the following circuit judges: Judge I. W. Bowman, of Orangeburg, first circuit; Judge H. T. Rice, of Aiken, second circuit; I Judge John S.
