THE JOUR HAL. JOHN KERSHAW, Editor and Proprietor. ( CAMDEN S. C , DECEMBER 19." 83F We crave the indulgence of our readers this week, for surrendering our columns al- < most entirely to advertisers. In a few weeks t more we shall be able to offer the usual va- i ricty. ' EOR THE JOURNAL. It has been an old and true saying that no . enterprise could live in Camden. Where is the Wateree Brass Band that was to have done so much good to our town ? It seems that they have hung their harps on the the weeping willows. Now, Mr. Editor, it docs seen) strange that a party or young men should attempt to raise a band, by going around to the citizens with a subscription list, and after raising the necessary funds, with what they'contributed themselves, procure a sot of instruments*, take the pains to learn, go to the expense of employing a teacher, give several concerts, and in a few short months blow thepnse'lves out of hearing, for no one hears ifeem now. John Chinaman would say,. "Hig heap, plenty horns, but no tooters." Is it just to the parties who contributed to the band and the mem. bers' themselves, to let this matter drop and the good enterprise fall through ? Wc all like to hoar good music, but are sadly disappointed with our band, for we never hear them now. We will have to send tor a hand organ, as it only'takes one person to grind music, and jo have a band of this size we 1J n rmnrnni We COuld CUUIU umajo uu<v u <pv. . - - hire one if'we could not get one otherwise. Now, Mr. Editor, we will come down to fine, points. Ifthe Waterce Brass Band do not care to keep up its organization, let them turn over the instruments to parties who will.? We believe there could be found in Camden young men who would take pride in an enterprise of this kind Let the Sand think over the matter. Let us have a brass band. Contributor. Dr. Tutt's Pills ?It is purely vegetable concentration for keeping the Bowels in natural motion and cleansing the system of all impurities, ar.d a positive cure for Constipation. Tuft: Dear Sir?Having used your Liver Pills and finding uone that have done my wife or myself as much good. I would like to know if they would do as well North as here. Have You Seen Her??A lady who for the last five years has been a leader of fashion in New York, and who may be seen twice a week in her elegant caleche driving ? aP ennork nnnlnc in rVntrnl Pnrk h ns I a span v* oujjwi %j j/vmvu - ?. ?. recently stated in the select circle to which she belongs, that the only article in existence which imparts beauty and lustre to the complexion without ultimately impairing the texture of the skin, and causing it to eollapsc and wrinkle, is Hagan's Magnolia Balm. The name of the distinguished member of the beau mondfi who made this declaration cannot, be given, but it maybe mentioned en passant that she has spent several years of her life in Europe, and is familiar with all the arts and preparations employed by the court beauties of the old world to enhance their charms. Germany and Rome.?A very significant result. has just been obtained in the Prussian Diet. On Thursday, in the Lower House of the Prussian Diet, amotion, which had for its object the admission of members of ecclesiastical orders as teachers of the public schools, wasrejcctcd by an overwhelming vote, the vote standing 242 to 83. The motion was made by a certain Herr Mallinc krot and the speech on the government side was made by Herr Falk. Falk's speech is said to have been brilliant. Its real' force, however, lay inthe%ct that, in speaking for the government, he could say that the government was determined to wage war with the influence of Rome. We arc not disposed to lay too much stress upon this vote, for all the world knows that Prussia, since the Reformation, has been a Protestant nation and as the motion was really intended to open; the doors of the public schools to the Jesuits, no other result could have been looked for. The real fight between the Imperial government and Rome must be fought in the Imperial Parliament when South as well as North Germany is represented. South Germany has never abandoned .the ancient Church, and although Bismarck is a determined man and bound to win if success lies within the region of the possible, it is not at all improbable that his severe anti-Romish policy may yet undo much of the work which was accomplished at Sedan. The one living barrier to the accomplishment of German unity and the consolidation of the Empire is the Catholicism of the South. It is not impossible that patriotism may prove stronger than religion ; but we cannot help thinking that Bismarck makes a mistake in bringing the Catholics to bay The policy of conciliation would have been wiser and perhaps more successful.?Herald. 250 Rolls Bagging, 25 Tons Ties.
