?i ..IIII _ / _ roKTRY. _ From Peters' Musical Monthly. HE WIPES THE TEAR FROM EVERY a EYE. ^ When sore afflictions crush the soul, k And riven is every earthly tic or The heart must cling to God alone; u He wipes the tear from every eye. Through wakeful nights when racked with pain, On bi d of languishing you lie, Remember still your Cod is near, To wipe the tear from every every-eyc. A few short years and all Is o'er, Yout sorrow, pain, will soon pass by; Then lean in faith on God's dear Son, He'll wipe the tear from every eye. Oh, never be your souls cast down, Nor let your hearts desponding be, Assured that God whose name is "Love," Will wipe the tear from every eye. ag ricultuli now superphosphate is jj! made. 10 Hon. Simon Brown, in his lecture before the Agricultural Couvculion at Manchester, on "Artificial Fertilizers," fi said superphosphate of lituc was made in the following manner: 0, Bunes are coltccted from every possi- C< Lie source?boys and girls gather them in the si reels of cities; butchers and provision dealers save them; men traverse the country with horses and wagods picking up from houses every pound ai they can get, while vCssels bring them in large quantities from wherever they N. can be found. These bones arc in a raw coudition, not having been used * by soap boilers, or in any other way to lessen their value. When collected _ atd thrown into heaps under cover, each bone is examined, andall such as arc suitable to be used in the arts are laid aside for turners, cut- CI tcrs, &c , to be used for knobs, han- c|( dies of knives,'canes aDd umbrellas, and the smaller pieces to be made into but- ^ tons. Such as arc not fit to be used in the arts aro thrown ioto iron retorts, each holding two barrels. The covers CI ? di of these retorts are fitted so exactly that pt they arc nearly quite air tight. >\Vhen Q thus made ready they are let down into Dl a furnace where the whole mass soon ^ acquires a white heat; but no air being admitted, no flame takes in the bones. CI In this intense heat all the animal matters, the gclatiue, oils, ammonia, &c., are driven off, and in the form of steam passes through a pipe to a reservoir prepared for it in a remote part of the building. The pipe through which thej pass is immersed in cold water, so that F the oil and gelatine leave it in a thickened state and most highly charged with the pungent ammonia. Careful experiment having taught the workmen how long to allow the retorts to remain iu the furnace, when that time ^ has expired, they are taken out, set upon aa iron wheelbarrow and trundled away to be cooled off. ? The bor.es are now reduced to what W is called boneblack, or animal charcoal. This is extensively used in refininir su * o gar. They are of a shining black color, brittle, and can be evsily and readily ground, not into flour, but into quite j-j small particles. Two barrels of this ground bone are then spread on the bottom of a wooden vat. Four gallous of tho liquids that ran out of the retort are then thrown upon it, and the whje thoroughly stirred. When the mass is sufficiently mixed, from fifty to sixty pounds of I3 sulphuric acid are added and iniDgled. A powerful ebullition, or boiling, takes place, which continues several minutes, during which time the workmen keep the whole mass in motion. When it subsides, the article has become what is called superphosphate of lime. It is ? then dried, packed and ready for market. lly this process nothing that the bone originally contained is lost, a!- q though it has undergone important chemical changes. Such is the man- at ncr in which superphosphate is obtain- e3 ed. Let us apply it to the crops. It is not equally adapted to all plants.? ? On all the Ilrascia family, including the cabbage, Swedish turnip, common flat t turnip, cauliflower, broccoli, Ac , its influcDce is usually striking and profitable, th The leaves of the plants grow larger aud thicker and assume a darker green than I have seen them under the stirni f -il TA. _ l UIUS 01 any oiner leriuizer. jli is aiso useful to beefs, mangolds, peas and ^ beaus, and all other of tho field and garden crops.
