SPARTANBUno, S. ?, 1865. . MESSRS. EDITORS: Will you please publish the following linos, written by a lady of Ha? vannah, Georgia? They express so much feeling and patriotism-so much soul-that no true Southron can read them without having every fibre of the heart touched. It is due to tho unknown fair one, to say, that the lines are published, without her consent or knowledge, by a stranger, into whoso hands a manuscript copy fell by fortunate accident, and who, most respect folly, begs forgiveness for publishing them; pleading as excuse his own high ap? preciation of their merit, and a general desire expressed, by several friends, to procure printed copies for preservation. Pj .?TUejr Cry Peace, Peace, when there is no Pea?*." They are ringing poace on my heavy ear No peace to my hoavy heart! ? ?They are ringing peace, I hear! I hear! Oh, God! how my hopes depart! They are ringing peace from the mountain side; With a hollow voico it comes- . Thor aro ringing peace o'er the foaming tide. And its echoes fill onr homes. They are ringing peace, and thc spring? time blooms Like a garden fresh and fair! But our martyrs sleep in thoir silent tombs - Do they hear that sound-do they hear? They are ringing peace, and the battle cry, And the bayonet's work aro done, And the armor bright, they are laying by, From the brave siro to the son. And the musket's clang, and thc soldier's drill, And thc tattoo's nightly sound; We shall hear no more, with a jovous thrill, Feace, peace, they arc ringing round! There women, still as thc stifled air On the burning desert's track, Not a cry of joy-not a welcome cheer And their brave ones coming back! There are fair young heads, in their morn? ing pride, Like, thc lUics pale they bow; Just a memory left to the soldier's bride Ah, God! sustain her now! There aro martial steps that wo may not hear! There are forms we may not sec! Death's muster roll, they have answered clear, Tliey are free! titanic Ced, ikey ure free: Not a fetter fast, nor a prisoner's chain, For thc noble army gone No conquerer comes o'er the heavenly plain Feace, peace to the dead alone! They are ringing peace, but strangers tread O'er the land where our fathers trod, And our birthright joys; like a dream, have fled, And Thou! where art Thou, oh, God! They arc ringing peace! not here, not here, Where tho victor's mark is set; Koli back to the North its mocking cheer No peace to the South-land vet! A SAVANNAH LADY. Tiglit Lacing. A lady correspondent of nu Edin burg paper writes as follows on thc subject of wearing corsets : " I am one of those pitiable objects who [occasionally draw forth the warmest remarks of doctors and elderly ladies. I am the envied pos? sessor of a waist of sixteen inches. Now, please, Mr. Editor, allow me, as one of your constant readers,. to say a very few words on the other side ; for, you know, no one can judge properly of a question without hear? ing both sides. In the first place, as regards the beauty of a small waist : the present style of dress makes a natural-sized waist look terribly clum? sy. It is all very well for the Greeks and Romans, and the often-referred to Venus de Medicis, but not for a young lady of our own times. Next, as to the dreadful effects of tight lacing. When stays were made of buckram and iron, the doctors might have had some cause to write against them ; but look at the beautiful French corsets now universally worn. They are quite a different article of dress. Besides, even in the last century, when stays were made so stiff and cut so straight, ladies enjoyed good health and were even more robust than those of the present dav. Again fchere'are actually more women in the kingdom than men, which would not be the case if, during so many years, I may say centuries, tight-lacing had really been tho 'suicide' it has been called. I have often thought it very hard that, if a young lady faints or dies suddenly, she should immediately be accused of haviug brought it on by tight-lacing: Do men never faint or die suddenly ? and ure they not sub? ject to consumption, spinal deformi? ties, and those other diseases which have beer, ascribed to tho corset ? For my own part, I never suffered any iin;c?iv?iueuoe. from this fashion, and my wnist is smaller than the ma? jority. The great secret is to begin early ; by this means the figure is moulded easily to a slender shape, without the severe compression neces airy when the figure has been ne- ! gleeted till ar? advanced age/ If tte corset is carefully fitted, and plenty ?frOOlh ftlloVTPd -rnn-nA ^hC" "ppt part of the chest, no inconvenience need bc caused. Can we be blamed for doing citar best to please ? Gen*" tlemon admire a slender figure ; arid can it be expected that any one will voluntarily make a "wall-flower" of herself because those to whom fash? ion is no longer an object of concern rake np old-fashioned prejudices against the most attractive element of female beauty ? Feeling sure you? will give me a fair hearing, I am, sir, yours respectfully, "CRINOLINA." The Empress of Austria is said to be one of the most beautiful women in Europe, and famed for the kindness of her temper, notwithstanding her rather haughty bearing. She is tall, slender, graceful, with a very ?white skin, and when pretty welL a good deal of color, large, limpid blue eyes, and an amazing head of light hair, which she wears in eight massive braids, wound round and round ber head, forming a magnificent diadem of hair, such as very few women could match from their own resources. She speaks all the principal tongues of Europe, and is particularly fond of the English language, which she speaks perfectly, as though it vere her native dialect. She is an excel? lent musician, paints and draws ex? tremely well, and is one of the boldest and most skillful horsewomen of Aus? tria. She possesses a stud of valuable horses, and a pack of splendid hounds ; and is said to take the warmest inter? est in the racing and hunting of Eu? rope, and to know by heart the names of tho heroes of the turf, biped and quadruped, of all the countries of Europe.
