A NEW SWINDLE.-Charles Gordon, ? alias Garton, tho reputed keeper of ? an intelligence office in the basement ? of No. 28 Amity street, a few days since, inserted in the German papers thc following advertisement: ""Wanted, one hundred healthy mea, to work on a settlement in South Carolina. Free passage, and two dollars and fifty eents per day. A good chance for late emigrants. Agreements made from 8 to 4 o'clock, at No. 28 Amity street, basement." A large number of young men, most of whom were newly arrived emigrants, attracted by the advertise? ment, called on Gordon, and were informed by bim that on the payment of one dollar and fifty cents each, tliey would be furnished a free pass? age in the steamship Quaker City to Charleston, South Carolina, where employment would be guaranteed them at the rates mentioned in thc advertisement. lu most cases, the money was un? hesitatingly paid over, and since that time the office bas been besieged by the victims, vainly asking why the steamer did not sail, and why they .were not furnished with sailing tick? ets. Finally they became convinced that they had been swindled, and yesterday, on the complaint of Alfred Wentzel, residing at No. 9G Eldridge street, Gordon was arrested by Officer Berry, of the Fifteenth Precinct, and taken before Justice Dodge at the Jefferson Market Police Court, to j answer the charge of obtaining money by false pretences. About 150 of the victims of the swindler liad collected in the court room, many of whom appeared as witnesses against him, and their in? vectives, applied to him in the choicest of German, were somewhat amusing to the spectators who had collected to hear particulars of this novel case. The accused declared that he was not the proprietor of the place, mere? ly the clerk; but, in spite of bis pro? testations, the niap^strate committed bini for trial iu default of $1,500bail. In addition to the complaints above stated, Mrs. Anna Bentley, who rented the accused his office and re? sides in tlie upper part of the house, charges him with stealing from lier mathematical instruments, valued at $223, the property of her husband. On this charge, lie was also commit? ted in default of $1,500 bail. [Neus York Nietes. ROOM WANTED. \ FURNISHED ROOM, for a single gen 1JL denian, is wanted. Apply at this office. Nov 20 For Sale.
