tumorous JJ.-partmrnt. Where It Would Do Most Good.?Id the younger days of Mr. Bodkin, K. C., a man was charged with murder at Clare assizes. The prisoner and the witnesses were all peasants who could only speak Irish, and the proceedings had to be conducted through an interpreter. Just before the trial the prisoner's brother approached a leading barrister who knew Irish and invited him to defend. The great man. however, could not take the case, but he said: "I have a young friend who knows Irish well and is an excellent lawyer. He'll see that the interpreter doesn't play any tricks. His name is Bodkin." At the end of the assizes the barrister ran against his would be client, whose fcae was wreathed in happy smiles. The barrister, immersed ir. work, had not followed the trial, but he said instinctively, "I can see you got your brother off." "Oh, yes!" was the reply. "I hope my young friend proved capable?" "Och, I didn't fee him, sor!" "Didn't you? What did you do then?" "Sure, I gave the fee to the interpreter!"?London Answers. Not a Case of Sentiment.?At a recent tea the gueata were speaking of how lacking in sentiment some people are, when Mrs. Albert S. Burleson, wife of the postmaster general, was reminded of a case along that line. One afternoon, Mrs. Burleson said, a fond wife returned home rather earlier than she had expected and found her husband burning a number of letters that had been" tenderly tied in soft blue ribbon. "What in the world are you doing, Harry," asked the wife, going up to the grate. "They are letters I wrote you before we were married, dear," answered the husband. "I thought 1 had better burn them." "You heartless, sinner," exclaimed the wife, almost tearfully. "Have you no sentiment at all?" "It Isn't a case of sentiment, dear," answered the husband, "it's u matter of business for your protection. I am trying to fix things so that when I die nobody can dispute my will on the ground of insanity."?Philadelphia Telegraph. Going Cheap.?Some time ago a man was awakened in the night to find his wife weeping uncontrollably. "My darling!" he exclaimed, "what is the matter?" "A dream!" she gasped, "I have had such a horrible dream!" Her husband begged her to tell it to him, in order that he might comfort her. After long persuasion she was induced to say this: "I thought I was walking down the street, and I came to a warehouse where there was a large placard. 'Husbands for sale.' You could get beautiful ones for fifteen hundred pounds, or even for twelve hundred, and very nice-looking ones for as low as a hundred." "Did you see any that looked like me?" The husband asked innocently: The sobs became strangling. "Dozens of them," gasped the wife, done up in bunches like asparagus, and sold for ten shillings a bunch." Imagination.?"Imagination," says a doctor, "must always be reckoned with In medicine?sometimes as a friend, sometimes as a foe. I know a doctor who treated an old woman for typhoid, and on each visit he took her temperature by holding a thermometer under her tongue. One day when she had nearly recovered the doctor did not bother to take her temperature, and he had hardly got 100 yards from the house when her son called him back. " 'Mother is worse,' said the man. 'Come back at once.' The doctor returned. On his entry into the sickroom the old woman looked up at him with angTy and reproachful eyes. " 'Doctor,' she said, 'why didn't you give me the jigger under me tongue today? That always done me more good than all the rest of your trash.'" ?New York Tribune. Easily Found.?It is often said that a Yorkshireman is so keen after money that he will grab at it dead or alive. A certain native worked at a sawmill, and one day he met with an accident, two of his fingers being cut off and dropping in the sawdust. Of course the man was hurried off to the Infirmary and after he was gone his mates began to look for his fingers in the sawdust, when in walked the foreman, who said: "I say, what are you wasting your time there for? Why don't you get on with your work?" One of the men replied: "That Yorkshire chap has had two fingers cut off, and we're looking for them." "What a waste of time," cried the foreman. "We'll soon find them." And he threw a half crown on the fioor, when up came the two fingers wriggling out of the sawdust to get at the money. Ananias Not so Many.?Senator Claude A. Swanson of Virginia told this: Tn the rnrner crooerv one dav a young farmer said that his colt had beaten the local train from Five Points to town. Another essayed to boast about his own nag. "Some time ago," said he, with an impressive air. "I was five miles from shelter when a heavy thunder storm came up. Jumping on my horse, I started for home at a gal'.op, and during the last two miles the roan raced the shower so fast that I didn't feel a drop of rain." "Easy to account for that," put in a doubtful one. "maybe the storm wasn't close to you." "Wasn't close to me!" exclaimed the other. "Well, I should say it was! Only twenty yards behind me was my dog, and he had to swim all the way," ?Philadelphia Telegraph. Next.?Little Bertha was invited out to dinner with her father and mother. Before she went, however, it was firmly impressed upon her mind that she must not speak unless spoken to. All went smoothly for awhile, but when some time elapsed and no notice was taken of her she began to get uneasy. Finally the hostess, seeing something was wrong, asked her what she would like next. "I should like to have you begin to ask me questions," was the polite reply.?Lippincott's. YORKVILLE PROOF SHould Convince Every Yorkville Reader.
