SPECIAL NOTICES. Polsouoae medicines. The theory that the virus cf disease can be safely counteracted by doses of poison, is false and dangerous. Within thc last twenty-five years, not le.-s than a score of virulent poisons have been added to the repo.-itory of the medical profession. They aro given in small doses, otherwise they would destroy life immediately ; but even in minute quantities, they produce, ultimately, very disastrous effects. It is unwise and unphilosopbical to employ, as remedies, powerful and insidious drugs, which, in subjuga? ting one disease, sow the seeds of another still moro unmanageable. None of these terrible medicaments openito with as much directness and certainty upon the causes of disease as .Hosteller's Stomach Bitters, a tonic and correc livc, vithuut a tingle delctrriom ingredient in it? competition. Arsenic and quinia are given for intermittents; bromide of potassium for nervous disorders ; strychnine and prussic acid for gener? al debility; mercury, ?n various forms, for liver complaint : preparations of chloroform und opium for sleeplessness : and yet these deadly drugs do not compare, as specifics for the diseases abovo enumerated, with that wbolesomo vcgetablo in vigorant and alterative, while they aro all so pernicious ?hut it is astonishing any physician should take thc responsibility of prescribing them. Let invalid.-, for their own sakes,, try the Bitters before they resort to tho poisons. The relief they ? iii experience from a course of thc harmless specific, will render a recourse to tho unsafe preparations referred to, quito unneces? sary. Ki-yt.tr S. v. OecemUr 31, 1S69. Mr. H. F.
