SELBY, of thc newly organized General Commission house of WILSON & SELBY, of Baltimore. This house enjoys first class advantage* for making purchases, and is worthy th?, ?ullcbl confidence. SALLSUAY. Monday last, although a cold and cloudy day, brought a considerable orowd to Sumter. Tho fall io the price of | cotton, caused to some extent by the full of gold, seemed to produoe a somewhat depressing effect upon our planters. They have invested heavily io fertilizers, et prices based upon higher figures for cotton and gold, and should tho tendency to par valu3 of ourrency continue, the margin of difference must increase, as the price of golton must gradually sett lo down to a gold basis, ar.d, of course, in? crease thc difficulties of their situation. Some property was sold at fair prices. A building lot, for mercantile purposes, fronting the Court House, was knocked down to a Virginia gentleman at $2,200 PAINFUL ACCIDENT. We regret to learn that Davis Item bert, (soo of that much beloved citizen ot Sumter, Jame-? W?. Reuibert) suffer? ed a severe wound in tho arin, from the accidental discharge of his gun, while out shootiug a few days since. Dr. Thoa. W. Du Bose wus summoned in at? tendance, and, wo have boen pleased to learn, the wounds are improving, and thc suffering of the youth much abuted LYNCHES' CREEK BRIDGES. Our Lynchburg friends, very natur? ally, are beginning to manifest some concern in regard to the bridges across Lynches' Creek. They endured, very quietly, muoh inconvenience from the want ufa bridge at Durant's Cross? ing, so long as tho taxing power was sus pended, but they now feel that they should begin to aee some of the proceeds of their money expended for county purposes, and, probably, in no wuy, just now, could it bc more acceptably applied than in the direction indicated. We trust%that 'our county commissioners will luke their 'claims into consideration. COLUMBIA FERIALE COLLEGE. The Board of Trustees ure earnestly requested to meet in Columbia, Wed? nesday, March 16th. A punctual attend ance is necessary. The members of thc Board arc: J. W. Kelly, F. M Kenne dy, A. B. S*JL> WC learn, with deop regret and sympathy, from the Columbia Phanix, of the death of Mr. PAUL II. B. SHU. *?ER, formerly a citizen of Columbia. He served, gallantly, throughout tho whole war, holding a Lieutenancy in tho second Regiment of South Carolina volunteers, losing a leg in battle Re? cently he had beeu a rosident of Walter boro; whither he had gone to assist and succor his bereaved and widowed "ister, whoso husband, Mr B. F. BRAD FORD, wa? brutally murdered in his own store, by oolored soldiers, in thc spring of 1808. A gallant soldier, a noblo, generous hearted man, a good citizen, a devoted brother, and fast friend, his loss to thoso immediately ?ooneoted with him is heavy iodoed, as well os to the community in which he lived. TH? "R?BAL OAEOLINIAN Tb? March number of this sterling monthly is, as usual, promptly before Us, aud fully sustains it? reputation. It ba? several particularly noteworthy pa pere. "Tb? preparation of Lund for cotton," signed "Low Middling,*" which we believe ia from the pen of General Johnson Hagood, of Barnwell, contains some most timely suggestions, backed up by the necessary facts aud fig. ures. "The Premium Cotton Crop," and "A Method of Planting and Cultivating Cotton/' sro also worthy of attention io the same connection, and are timely and to the point. Some hints on the ''Cul? tivation of the Castor Bean and Bene" ' for oil, from the pen of Goo. E. P. Al? exander, suggests another means of di? versifying our industry. "Poultry Funning for the South," a beautifully illustrated article on the best breeds of Fowls, wilgie interesting and profitable to all who are fond of eggs and chick? ens. Articles on Sisal Hemp aud the cultivation pf the .Banana commend themselves particularly to Flor.da rea? ders. The ? ditor's "Suggestive Faots" should set our peeple to thinking. Wo hope they will heed the warning the article embodies-don't negleot every thing else to plant cotton. WHO IS TO' itt. .v ni Ii i MR. EDITOR :-I have beeu so sorely annoyed, for the past six or cigh months,, by thc failure of my letters to reach their destination, that I feel cull? ed upon to mako tho inquiry contained in the above caption. I have, six times, forwarded letters to Augusta, and have reason to believo that none of them reached that point. I mailed three of them at Sumter, one of which I had registered, and thu other three at Meohanicsville. Five of these letters were addressed to thc office of thc Ban? tu, of the South, and the other to a private gentleman in Augustu, covering un enclosure lo the sume office. Anoth? er letter addressed to the office of the Charleston News, and ono to the editor of the Columbia Guardian,! feel moral ly certain, also failed to reach charles? ton and Columbia. Many private let? ters mailed at Meohanicsville and Sumter by me, in courtesy requiring an answer, have elicited no reply, and I must think that they went the same way as the others. Who is to blame? Postmasters, Muil Agents, or who? The annoyance is intolerable. If others suffer as I have done, thc Post Office or Mnil Agettt system may as well bc abolished. I do not wish suspicion to rest on any innocent party, and I call attention to this matter thus, publicly, that thc innocent may vindicate them selves, and the guilty be brought to bay. A number of thc letters mentioned by me contained communications for the pre.??, on all of which full .postage, and sometimes an excess of postage, was prepaid. Thc bulk of these letters, muy have induced the suspicion, that they contained money. Certain it is, that not one of these bulky letters has ever been heard from Yours Respectfully, W. G. KENNEDY. If it is week and languid, the whole physioa' struoture ?rill be enervated. If it is vigorous, the entire organisation will be strong to resist the nutoward aud depressing influonce of a damp and vitiated atmosphere. A pure and powerful tonio is therefore espe? cially nooded as n safeguard against the diseases most common in the spring, and Hostotter's Stomach Bitters being the most wholesome aud potent medicine of the elliss at present known, a course of it is particularly ndvi.-ahlo at this pe? riod of tho yoar.
