FAIR NoicE.-The troubles in the Spring and the consequent scarcity of money in the summer, caused subscribers and advertisers, not a few, to fal; into arrears. They are now earnestiy called to come in and settle between this and January first. After that time all accounts of this kind will be given out for collection. Save us and yourselves trouble, friends, by acceding to our request. R. C. Shiver's establ-:hment is at night brilliantly illuminated by thirty first-class lamps. A. M. WICKER-tbe King of Confectection ery and Toy Dealers is ready with his Christ mas fancies for the people. Give him a call. R. C. SHIVER & Co.-Advertise something new handsome and serviceable, and have in store everything else that can be called for. L. R. MARSHALL-has a blazing Christmas advertisement. If the public cannot find wl at they want at Marshall s, they must be hard to please. AT COsT.-Mr. S. Sampson offers tis en tire stock of goods-very large in variety-at cost, as it is his intention to make a change in his business. Bargain hunters, attention. CHANGE or TIME.-The sale of personal poperty of the estate of Dr. J. N. Herndon, advertised in last issue for the 12th inst., will not come off until the 27th of December. See advertisement. CONFIRMED.-In the Senate, Wednesday, the following named officers for the County of Newberry, were confirmed: D. R. Phifer. County Treasurer; James W. Hayward, Auditor, and William Summer, Trial Justice. A WEITE PARTRIDGE.-We learn from Dr. George Garmany. that his recent bird hunting expedition with a company of gen tlemen. resulted in the capture of a large and beautiful white partridge. C. H1. Davis & Co , it will be seen, have opened a restaurant and saloon where din ners and suppers consisting of fish, game, and marketable delicacies, are served up in style. Segars and fine liquors also on hand. IMPROvEMNT.-Messrs.Lovelace & Wheel er are erecting -.wo cottages in tow.n, and contemplate the erection of two more. This is a positive evidence of local improvemen:. We hope soon to record the erection of a number of buildings. There could be no better investment here. AT CosT.-We notice with deep regret that Mr. Mathias Barre, one of our best mer chants, has determined to relinquish his business, and to that end1 offers his extensive and handsome stock of goods at cost. Per sons desirous of getting goods cheap are in vited to call early. Dr. Whaiey is kept at home because of the epizoo. He fears that his horse is tak ing the "epizo-otic up-his-snott-ic" and for fear of the "equine-ox-ial" taking off his noble steed, he not having, like Richard III, a kingdom to offer for another, begs his country friends to call at his office. A HANSDsoME CHROMO FREE.-New sub scribers to the Temperance Advocate, as well a.s old ones renewing with the regular sub scription price, $2, will receive a beautiful Fruit Chromo free. Send for Advocate and get the picture by all mneans. PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBCMs.-No handsomer or more appropriate Christmas or NewYear's present can be made, than a beautiful Photo grap)hic Album, in which can be placed the pictures of loved relatives and friends. Mr. Wiseman, our artist, we are p)leased to say, has just received a very elegant assorttaent, and will be happy to show or dispose of them. We advise our readers to call early and secutre one of the prettiest. itOw.-A party of emigrants from foreign parts arrived here last Saturday, and taking e'xcepDtions to something or somebody, got up a small-sized row in the afternoon Re port says there were eighteen men killed, and a large number wou.jded, and that the streets flowed in blood; but we believe this to be an exaggeration, and that other than a fans no damage resulted. The police troops fought bravely and made captures, and in a brief time all was quiet again. 1ROSEMONT CEMETERY.-We had hopes when liosemont was opened that it would be tastefully laid off and properly cared for, hut we are measuratbly disappointed. The ground is overrun with weeds, and trespassed upon bv cattle. Is there any vested authority for its management? If there is nor-, we would like a board organized with a presiding offi cer who would discharge his duties. INFORMATIONi AGENCY.-We invite atten ' tion to Davis & Co.'s Patent Land Informa tinon, and Claim Agency, Washington, D. C. It wvill be seen that they wish to purchase one hundred and fifg: thousand acres of South Carolina!lands, upon which to locate a Colo,ny of Swedes. This firm also enjoys advantages and facil ites for imparting information concerning p?tents, bounties, licenses, decisions, pen sions and claims generally. IlA5MLS FIrra.-One of the neatest places of business in town is that of Capt. J.F. Speck's, and it affords us pleasure to call attention to it. It is worthy of note, thlat this eneprsn gentleman has, in a remnarkably short timle, built him up a busi ness5 whiebS is a credit not oniy to himseif, tbn: a pride to his friends and !& communi L tv. His stock of holiday goods in jewelry, fancy goods, wtae's, &c., is splendid. Call in and look. k ATTENTI0N MERCIIANT.-If yon have any specialities which you wduld di.pose of during the approaching holidays, anything nce,. sweet, or savory, anything handsome, elegant, anything warming and good, in short anything for anybody, let it be known througb the columns of the HERALD. Peo pie do not like to run about making inquiries where this or that thing can be had, in such a busy, bustling time. Anything from heel taps to a nightcap, ginger -naps to a snapping turtle-oysters included, jtws-harps to crying dolls, or anything else will be inerted with pleasure for the benefit of the people. TH ENTEn'rAINMEXT, on Thursday night last, by the Silver Crnets, drew a crowded house, whic,i gave evidence of :he apprecia tion of our citizens of an amusement of a light, pleasing and moral cuaracter. The Cornet Ban have it in their power to make their entertainments highly acceptable, and if they will.study to give an excellent variety they moust succeed. The new features intro duced on the last occasion were weli re cived-and will serve as a guide for the f! ture. The versatile and humorous Dr. Saul -)f world-wide reputation-it is not ex pected can be made available every time, for according to the proverb, "Maurice does not kill a cow every day;" but some other bright particular star, floating about in ec centric circles, tnay accidentally either shoot perpendicularly or in a taugent, down this way, and may be urabbed up, gobbed up, or gone for by the Cornets, so that they may show their desire to give that variety which is the spice of life. Dr. Saul will accept thanks for his efforts, till he is better paid. le made a splendid debut. And so did the star dancer, from the old North State-he certainly knows how to use his legs. The overtures were good, double dancing, etc. We suggest, respectfully that the piece en titled the "Manager in Distress," be laid on the shelf for the present, and at the sane time, as the ghost is an important and seem ingly necessary character, --nd puts in his appearance in other scenei equally as dis tressing, let him make his visits short. This suggestion is in good part; we want the Cornets to succeed and put money in their purses, and draw wrinkles out of the faces of the audience "for ever and a day," and the best way to do this is to give pleasant varie ty. PERsoNAL.-We had the pleasure last week of meeting with Rev. Samuel Lander, A. M., President of Williamston Female Col lege, and Professor of Latin, Greek and Nat ural Sciences. The College has im excellent faculty, and a large number of pupils. This Seat of Learning was opened in February of the present year, in the Town of Wiliamston, and already enjoys a good reputation. The Col!egiate Year is divided into two sessious of twenty weeks each, with two in tervening vacations. The -pring Sossion, 1873, will open on Monday, February 31, and clo>e on the 21-t of June. The Fall bession will open on Monday, the 8th of July, and close Commencement Day, November2. The r-egular vacation is during the months of December and January, so that pupils have, the benefit of a healthful summer resi dence and the waters of Willinmston Mine ral Spring. The course of study consists of the School of Letters and the School of Arts. Of the former are the primary department, interme drate department, the first college class, the elementary English department, and the de partmnents of belies-lettres, natural seiences, mathematics, Latin, Greek, and French. The latter of vocal mnusic, instrumental music and the ornamental department. We had the pleasure, also, of meeting Col. Ball. of Laurens, who formerly was editor of the Laurensville Herald. Col. Ball is a most pleasant and genial gentleman. There is a cheerful heartiness in his deportment and manners, which is very fascinating. The pleasure was also ours of meeting with R. W. Shand, Esq.. formerly editor of the Union Times, which position he filled with much ability. Mr. Shand was here on busi ness connected with the estate of the late Dr. J. N. iHerndon. AN ARMF'ULL-Certainly, those who sub scribe for the Schoolday Magazine, get An Armfull for their dollar. They nrot only have the choice of two beautiful $2 00 steel en gravings, entirely free of cost, but the Maga zine itself is one of the very best that is pub lished and should be in alHihouses and schools in -Ire land. Our readers would do well to send a three cent stamp to J. W. D)aughaday & Co., Publishers, Philadelphia, Pa., and get a specimen number w-ith all the particulars The Schjoolday Magazine is only another and a more appropriate name for the School day Visitor, which many of our readers have been taking for some time. No other change hias been made, in fact none for the better could be made, as this excellent ,onthly is all that it can be. November 21st, at the residence of the bride's father, by Rev. G. T. Harmon, Mr. JoHN R. H occoMnE, of the Picketns Sentinel, to Mi-s FANNtE E. WILLIAMS, all of I'.ckens Cour.:y, S. C. OBITU'AEY. Died, in the town of Newberry, on the 25th of November. of consumption, Mrs. sUs.AN KINARD, aged 50 years and 6 days. The subject of this brief tribute was for thirty-three years, or two-thirds of her life, a c ,nsistent member of the Lutneran Church, and by a blameless walk, and faithful dis charge of her christian duties, not only as to her Maker, but in the relations of wife, mo ther and friend, had endeared herself in the strongest bonds to all around her. .Her love for husband and children was deep and bound less, and by them is her death most sorely felt, for with strict sense of duty, firm will, unirn eery and faithfulness, in all that becomes the christian woman, she knew not what it was to fail in any of these respects. Her chariny, too, was another beautiful trait in her character, for it is said of her that no one ever asked of her in vain-arnd to such will the Fa:ther's promise be abundantly ful tilled. A cup of cold water in His name, the a ttle dleeds of kindness, and litt'e words of love, so easily bestowed, assuredly make of earth an Eden, and insure a Heaven above. For years her health had beeti failing-under the in-idious attacks of that dreadful disease consumption, but though much enfeebled, and enduring at times great bodily suffering, she bore it all uncomplaingly, and minis tered, till within a short period of her disso lutiotn, to tihe comlort and happitness of her family. 1Her life was an example of patient enduirance and trust, and her end everlasting peace, for she was ready when the summons came. Biessed are the dead who die in the Lord. A large and sorrowing family, husband, sons, daughters, grand-children, and numer otis relatives, feel the loss which to her is such infinite gait:, and they are admonished not to grieve ars witirout hope, but so to live that thir? etnd may be: as peaceful as hers, and in the hope of a meeting,.where tears arc not .hed, and sorrow and psa are forever un known.
