HO S3E WHIPPING CASE SETTLES OUT OF COUBT * " The case of J. H. Bailey against 21 men and women of Canon, Ga., for $35,000 damages, on account of being hjroewhidped by several ladies of that place last year, settled on Tuesday for $400, that amount to include settlement of fines of $25 against each defendant by the town of Canon. Prof. J. H. Bailey alleged that he was horsewhipped by the ladies on February 7, 1908, and driven from the town. In answer of the defendants two of them admitted striking him with bnggy whips, and the others deny striking him. All deny driving him from the town. In this answer the ladies set forth that Bailey had stated that there was not a virtuous woman in Canon and that they went to him to see whether or not he had really said so. He admitted that he had said so, except that he did not mean it to apply to ene of the ladies present. The ladies had armed themselves with buggy whips, that is a portion of them had, ana they say they did so because Bailey was of a violent temper. When he said to them that he did mean to apply the statement to them, they allege that he drew his hand behind bim as if to draw a pi9tol and that they then struck him with the whips. EVER HAVE IT? A special from Spartanburg say9: Vliss Lauise Barenger, a 17-year-old j prl from Gastonia, and W. G. Wood- | ill, who had been connected with a i show in that town, came to Spartan- j mrg last week to be married. The na^riage was barely prevented by the jirl's mother who had Chief of Police 3arroll, of Gastonia, wire Chief Hall, :o hold the girl there. The mother :ben telephoned the girl to wait until *ke got there, which the daughter agreed to do. After Mrs. Barenger arrived it was shown that Woodall had been living with a show girl in Gastonia as his wife. Woodall admitd this but said they were not married. Miss Barenger was persuaded to go back home with her mother. The couple had known each other umy uiree wccxxa. ^ The Pain Made Her Faint. "For almost four years I had a sore on my leg," say9 Mr9. Olive Kurd of Madison, N. H., "and this spring: a doctor healed it up. I felt fine for about a month but had to be on my feet a good deal and above my knee came a swelling as big as my tist. It hung down and was as red as if it had been blistered and so sore that'l could hardly get around. The cords of my leg seemed to be stiff and the pain was so bad at times that it made me faint. One of the neighbors told me about Sloan's Liniment so I got a bottle and put some right on. Zsext morning I could walk ever so much better and I kept right on using the Liniment night and morning. It took down all the swelling, and the redness and soreness have gone too. I shall never be without Sloan's Linhnet in the house again and will recommend it to all suffering friends."
