There are many queer things that happen in life That we do not understand; And we sigh, and we wish for the, things in life ? That are not at our command. 'Tis often the case that we have all we need, And all that the Lord intends; Yet we seek after more and think that we need More things that the world com mends. We think that our lot is the hardest on earth, And we wish to change the conditions; And there is naught would suit us so well on earth As some other person's position. The things that we do with the greatest of skill Are irksome to us we say; And we wish to exchange then for another's skill, j And we wish to receive his pay We wish to be rich and possess the good tning9 That none but the rich enjoy; And we worry and fret, and covet these things, And much of our pleasure destroy. We have missed our callings, and life is all wrong, And we wish we were children again, That we might live life over and correct this wrong, And pursue our talents amain. We would correct our l\ve9 and do something else That would bring both wealth and fame; We'd live in grand style and enjoy something else. And make for ourselves a great name. We would strive with the fates and win for ourselves An item on history's pages; And we would grow to be great and prove ourselves A good to the coming ages. But the powers of fate have not so decreed, And the die is already cast; We must struggle along under fate's stern creed, 4 We cannot live over the past. If we could return to the days of our youth, . i i _ 1! r. ? _ _ _ Ana Degiu liie aver again, We might stray from the path of duty in youth, And fall infoTsin's domairr. * So let us be content with our lot in life, And not despair of success; For if good has befallen, or evil in life, We have no means of redress. If fortune has smiled and happiness crowned us, We should thank the Almighty God; If life is a failure and evil has bound us; We should bow to the Chastening Rod. Composed by J. W. BAWL. ?~ \itu~ ii/.n D-?? miuniey nmmeiman, vimu vvcid riesent at the Hearing, Makes Statement. On account of the various versions published of the evidence in the commitment hearing of Mr. T. S. Glover, charged with the killing of Mr. E. S. Rawl, in Florida, a few weeks ago, The State correspondent called on Mr. Geo. Bell Timmerman, who was present at the hearing, for the facts in the case. His statement, which is based on the records, is widely different from the versions that have found their way into print. For instance, a write up in an Aiken newspaper of the 24th ult. says in effect that Mr. Rawl reached in his hip pocket for his pistol and, after the shot by Mr. Glover, that Mr. Rawl "had his hand on his own pistol." The facts given by the only ej^e-witness, Mr. A. M. Perry, bears out the statement that Mr. Rawl was un armed, and he made no motion as if to draw a pistol or any other weapon. On the contrary, he threw up his hands as if to catch Glover's pistol or to protect himself from the shot. The statement as published in The State, that Glover was held for manslaughter, ,is also incorrect. The committing magistrate decided that the defendant should be held for murder. Mr, Timmerman says that he found that Mr. Rawl has many friends in his adopted State, all of whom deplored the untimely end of ^uch a promising young man. The regret for the killing was deepened from the fact that there appeared no necessity for it. Beware of Frequent Colds. A succession of colds or a protracted cold is almost certain to end in chronic catarrh, from which few persons ever wholly recover. Give every cold the attention it deserves and you may avoid this disagreeeble disease. How can you cure a cold? Why not try Chamber Iain's Cougli Remedy? It is highly recommended. Mrs. M. White, of Butler, Tenn., says: "Several years ago I was bothered with my throat and lungs. Someone told me of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. I began using it and it relieved me at once. Now my throat and lungs are sound and well." For sale by Kaufman Drug Co. A woman shakes a rug when it has the dust, but she doesn't apply the same method to a man, A large bottle of Horehound, Mullien ana Tar for 25 cents and will do you good to relieve the children of their coughs and colds. Try it. Only 25 cents. The Murray Drug Co., Makers, Columbia, S. C. It mav be imnossible to take some thing from nothing, but you come pretty near it when you take the conceit out of some people. Muscular Fains Cured. During the summer of 1903 I was troubled with muscular pains in the instep of my foot," says Mr. S. Pedlar, of Toronto, Ont. "At times it was so painful I could hardly walk. Chamberlain's Pain Balm wa? recommended to me, so I tried it and was completely cured by one small bottle. I have since recommended it to several of my friends all of whom speak highly of it." For sale by Kaufmann Drug Co. A man may be as straight as a string, and, also like a string, be broke. Try one bottle of Horehound, Mullien and Tar and be relieved of that cough and cold and you will have no other cough mixture. The Murray Drug Co., Makers, Columbia, S.
