CIRCULATION 2,376. Wednesday, November 20,1907. Here's lock to the "Devil." r Attorney General Lyon is not much * on <(pntting stripes" on dispensary grafters, but he is h? on injunctions. We beg to announce that we will accept clearing house certificates for anbsciiption to The Dispatch. All the merchants doing business in the towns of Batesbnrg and Lees ville are going to close tneir scores on (Thanksgiving Day. Why don't the = Lexington merchants do likewise? We don't like to be forever kicking ST about the condition of our streets, bnt ** du$y demands it Therefore, it Is with a feeling of reluctance that we call the attention of the council to E : I the wretched shape onr streets were in on Monday and Tuesday. It - was *j almost a physical impossibility to e: * cross the streets anywhere without wading through mud and water over n your shoe tops. Council should real- ^ ize the great importance x>f keeping f( our streets and sidewalks in at least h such condition as to make it possible ^ for pedestrians to walk the streets ^ without having to walkthrough mud si and water. Lotus have the streets R: improved, Mr. Mayor? Q] During our absence and the contin- p ned and prolonged illness of one of pur printers and assistant editor, Mr. ^ D. R- Haltiwanger, we ask our read I- ere liU WiUl US UI1U11 wo UJUSU uiu cntside work, gathering in that which c< we so badly need?the cart wheels. 11 The office force is short and oh this 01 account, it is impossible to keep S things going in regular order: However, we have only two more weeks of oar trip, and by that time, we hope _ to have Mr. Haltiwanger back, and we expect to give our readers a better paper than ever before. Until then h we ask yon not to: ''View as with a critics eve, ta V.V JBat pass our imperfections by." The people of Gaston and Swansea _ certainly need more and better public roads. There is an effort being made io open up a road leading from Gaston B to Swansea, which is greatly needed ^ and our county commissioners would a ^display good judgment if they would ei establish this road. We understand, though, that the matter has recently a] been dropped by the commissioners D on account of some hitch or minor ?J obiection. Our officials all too often n listen to the objections and advice of ? others, when they should use their n< own judgment and do as David Crock- ^ et said, "Be sore you are right and . then go ahead." Let this road.be oi opened at once and others that are greatly^needed in this and other sec- ^ tions! There , is nothing like good jc roads. = ' End of Couxt. t 1 The common pleas court ended up | last week with little accomplished, ft One case wa9 begun on Monday, but I % resulted in a nonsuit, and the jurors Were excused until Thursday. The court resumed then and two damage -cases against the county were ready and tried^before the, same jury, and 1 the other jurors were excused from ft further attendance. These two cases were two small girls, Notiipay and > " Bewlah Sanders, now living in Columbia, brought by E. McClarkson, and damages were claimed because of injuries ^received by Jjiese children falling from a wagon in the Augusta , public road, their fall alleged to have tJ been caused by a washout in the road. Messrs. J. B. Wingard and Efird & Si Dreher appeared for the county(' and f - ' ? made a lengthy fight. The verdicts & were, for Notimay $125; and for Wik? Benlah $25. .
