IMIt.YEItS' UNION (ALL IS ISSUED An important meeting of the State Farmers' Union has been called to convene in Columbia, January 1G-17. b'ach union is urged to send dele gates and in communities where there are no unions, on(y delegate is de sired. The union will review the measures tvhich will be brought to the legisla te by the union for the benefit oi :he farmers. Among the proposed neasures is the warehouse act that has jeen pronounced constitutional. The irevious act was declared unconstitu ional by the supreme court. Tho secretary of the state union. J. Vhitner Reid, has sent out the t'ol owing call with the request that the lewspapers of the state give it the lecessary penalty. The South Carolina State Farm rs' Union is hereby called to convene n Columbia, Thursday, January 16th 013, at 3 p. m., and will probably bi n session through the 17th. All county unions in the state are rged to send delegates and all mem ors in good standing are cordially I ivited to attend. In counties when lere is no county union organized ach local union is requested to send | ne delegate. County unions will j iect delegates according to the usual j asis of representation. The legislature will be in session t is the purpose of this meeting tc lace properly before the committee f the legislature the measures we ish enacted into law. The legisla te committee will report a state arehouse bill that has been careful { prepared and is pronounced well ish perfect by eminent constitution 1 lawyers to whom it was submitted here will be other matters of legis ition to be considered in which the nion is vitally interested. The work of the union throughout le state will be reviewed and plans >r the extension of the organization ill be discussed. Dr. Garrison's statistics, which he drew on from the situation as he Jound it in this county were start ing. He said there were as many :ases in this county as any county .n the upper section of South Caro ina. He displayed two large maps jf the county on the wall and point ed out how the pellagra cases were distributed as the commission found them. IHsrasp on Iiwrreasp He further sand that the commis sion had actually seen 300 patients suffering \ ith the disease and there ?vere many more whom time did not permit them to visit. The disease ixists in the rural districts, in the nill districts and, in fact, in every locality of the county. The worst of the situation, accordin to Dr. Garri son. is that there is no indication of a subsiding, but the disease is spread ing. Dr. Garrison gave a history of the Thompson - McFadden commission. Pifteen thousand dollars was given jy Dr. McFadden and $7,500 of that imount was given to the work in Spartanburg county. The commis sion intends to return to Spartanburg next summer for further researches, but in order to make the conquest more complete, a hospital should be built, in which to install some of he best laboratory equipment pos ?i h 1 n trv }\cx HqH anrt a nlnrp fnr bringing patients in order that thor jugh study might be made of the baffling disease. Dr. Garrison pleaded for the hos pital, but said that the commission would return whether a hospital was it tlu-ir service or not. W. S. Montgomery of Spartan mills, A. M. Law of Enoree mills, John A. Law of Saxon and W. A. Lindsay of the D. E. Converse Com pany assured the physicians of their sympathy in the movement and would do everything in their power o bring about the further work of ho commission. They were willing o give one cent per spindle or 10 v-ents per loom to the work. J. B. Cleveland of Whitney mills was not present, but a letter was read from him in which he said that he was heart and soul in the move n?*nt for the pellagra hospital. This committee will look after all details and decide on the plans for the campaign. The committee met immediately after the meeting adjourned and de cided to call on all the merchants, r-otton mill presidents, the heads of all manufacturing enterprises and the people generally for subscriptions.
