Earl Bass was the ace on the Gamecock tea that was the 1975 College World Series runner up to the Texas Longhorns. Bass also finished second in the Lefty Gomez Plate Award that was given to the nation’s top amateur player in 1975. Bass was an All-American in 1974 and 1975 and is a mem ber of the USC Athletic Hall of Fame. He is the Gamecocks’ all time leader in strikeouts (392), shutouts (10), wins by a right-hander (34) and wins in a sea son (17). Mike Curry Bats: Left Throws: Right Bom: 2/5/77 Position: Outfield Mike Curry was a Baseball America All-American in 1998 and was a freshman All-American in 1996. Curry is the Gamecocks all-time career stolen base leader with 122. His single-season stolen base record of 60 was broken in 1999 by Brian Roberts’ total of 67. Curry stole 85 bases in 1999, splitting time be tween Charleston, W.Va. and Wilmington, N.C. While he was at Iowa Western Junior College in >1, he also hit .493 and was named Iowa Player of Year and first team JUCO All-America. After playing mainly second base and right field in first year at USC, he moved back into his junior col : position of shortstop. In his two seasons at USC, he also stole 27 bases, to il 70 RB Is and placed himself in the fifth spot on the ime Gamecock record for most hits with 94. In 1993, he was named to the AU-SEC team and al as chosen by the NCB WA for the All-American team. In 1974 while playing second base, he led die Game cocks with an average of .987 (103 putouts, 122 assists, 3 errors). In the shortstop position, Grantz averaged .971 in 1976 with 48 putouts, 84 assists and 4 errors. Grantz was chosen by the Baltimore Orioles in the fifteenth round out of high school. Instead, he came to Car olina, belted 10 homers and batted .287 as a sophomore and the club’s lead-off man. He was second on the team with 30 stolen bases and only committed three errors at second base. High School: St. Andrews Mike Cook led USC to its last College World Series in 1985 with a 16-2 record. Cook was named an All-American by Baseball America and the Collegiate Coaches following that season. He was drafted by the California Angels in the 1986 June draft. Cook pitched parts of five seasons in the ma jors for the Angels, the Minnesota Twins and the Baltimore Orioles. He finished his major league career in 1993, ending up with a 1-6 record and a 5.55 ERA.
