f? iTlilll'lll III! IIMI PII mil I 1'he Experience and Mis- j eries of a Boston Mis- j sionary. J u.st as the Yon, l'liul was backing j xmt, Amiuidad, with liis bandanna and wardrobe included, stepped on the boat find on reaching the cabin made himself easy, as to all pious appearances, and began to wear the demeanor of a patron saint on a carnal mission. Thus went the affair until about midnight, when the boat lauded at a cotton pile. Aminidad sat dosing by the stove, dreaming, as we suppose, of the many stories circulated during the years of his boyhood, in his native climes, as to Southern inhumanity towards the negro race. Suddenly they began to roll the cotton aboard. "Lend a helping hand there, and fork them fellers aboard," roard the mate to his men. Our dreamy hero caught tlio sound. The many bales of cotton being rolled over by different sets of hands, kept up a continuous tliuuiping noise as though all below stairs were engaged in a murderous fight. "Cut 'im again," exclaimed the mate every now and then. "Turn 'im over, head 'iin on his end; cut 'im "again; keep him away from that doctor, head 'im up; down with him; roll liim over; cut 'im again; get a .good holt on 'im; there that will do; now, damn 'im, heave 'im the hole." After listening to what ho supposed to be a wholesale murder, and being horrified by such barbarian exclamations, -Aminidad thought to escape. Rising from his chair, he passed out on the boiler deck, when a pet bear, chained to a stanchion, clasped him in his playful embrace, a cunning trick the bear 'had been taught. Just at this moment '< the mate wanted the yawl, and ordered the crew to "let go the painters," at which moment Aminidad screamed out "for God's sake don't let the painters loose, the bear has got me now;" and . making an unusual effort, he tore loose from the bear, jumped from the boiler deck to the bank, and was not heard of until through his recent reports published up North against the sinloving barbarous South. Tlio pet bear referred to belonged to Captian Ed. Ryland, Clerk on the ' Henry Von Phul, which frequently amused himself hugging the passengers and drinking honey and brandy with tlie crew.?Memphis Balk-tin. -m Tax Payers "Will notice that the assessment and collection of the U. ?S. But ; \when the subject of hell-fire was pre- ' : sented to him, although he expressed J - some doubts as to its literalnesss, yet it ( *. effected a happy change in the politics. We commend this idea i to Stevens, Sumner and Greeley.
