Hunley, ! secretary of the Board of Trade of (Chesterfield, made complaint to tha Railroad Commission of South Carolina in regard to the poor mail ser vice upon the Chesterfield & Lancaster R. R.; and also made a r^N quest for Sunday mail service. N- Mr. W. L. Stanley, assistant to the President of the Seaboard Air Line Railway, with headquarters in Atlanta, and Mr. C. Lane, superintendent of the C. & L. Railroad, with headquarters at Marion, S. C., came to Chesterfield Wednesday to hold a conference with Mr. Hunley rcla- 1 tive to the matter. Messrs. Stanley and Lane staled in the conference that the railroad company was op- 1 erating the C. & L. at a dead loss, < as each year the revenues of the 1 road were not sufficient to pay expenses and that the deficit last year ' L- .totaled $10,000. However, they 1 stated, that it was the desire of the ' railroad company to furnish the very best services possible to their patrons I nnd that they intended doing every- 1 thing in their power looking toward i tViio on/I tUof f -1 ?? ? ? ?* ? W. Cole, of the Hopewell section, had the misfortune to lose tyro mules a few days ago. He is a poor man, and had only the two ^ mules. No doubt the people of the 1 community should help to repair his losses. Any amount given to him directly or to either of the undersign- C ed will be truly appreciated. I J. K. HAIR, N. L. Announce] ^ H in mind the dates w^m : and Train Promised on C.& L. ing Sundays, upon a schedule to leave Pageland every morning in time to make the Seaboard connections at Cheraw and returning leave Cheraw after the arrival of the A. \ C. L. train from Florence. This mo- I tor car will carry passengers and in I addition to the. daily papers from Charleston over the A. C. L. and ' also whenever the north bound Sea- | board No. 4 is late in the morning, j will bring the daily papers from Co- j lumbia. This motor car will also bring the daily papers every Sunday afternoon. During the conference Mr. Hunley insisted that the motor car, in uddition to bringing the daily papers, also bring all delayed first class mail, but the railroad officials would not promise this because they are afraid that the capacity of the motor car will not allow that to be done. They agreed, however, that they would keep this matter in mind with a view to granting this request and if it was possible they would do so. It certainly will be good news to .he people of Chesterfield, Pageland, Ruby and Mt. Croghan to know that, is soon as the motor car arrives (and ;his will not be long off now) thai whenever the north bound train over he Seaboard is late that they can get heir State and Record at least that ifternoon, and not have to wait unil the following day. And for the irst time since the C. & L. railroad vas built it will ho nr?a?ih1n ubscribers to the Charleston News ind Courier and Charleston Amerian to receive these Qftpers the same | lay they are published . H Arm Merchant Ships; Still Hope For Peace Washington, March 12.?The United Stutes government to-day look the only formal step that will precede the sailing for the war zone of American merchant ships armed to resist attacks by German submarines. Notice to t lie world of the intention to place :;n armed guard on merchantmen was 'liven in u communication sent by the State Department to all embassies and legations in Washington. The statement, which, it is nssuiiK'd, will ' e transmitted to Germany by the wiss minister, follows: "In view of the announcement of th" imperii 1 German government on lallU.'tl'V -'4 I - 10 17. tlisil nil ahiria those of nrul -;;ls included, met within certain /.ones of the high seas would l>e II..k without any precaution being taken for the safety of the persons on hoard and without the exercise of visit and search, the government of th" United States has dote rmined to place upon all American vessels sailing through the barred zones an armed guard for the protection of the vessels and the lives of the persons on hoard." Officials continue to ho reticent about the arming of ships and the probable date the first would be ready to sail. Speculation continues as to the | part the United States may play if forced into netual hostilities by Germany. In official quarters the opinion is very clear that President Wilson for the present at least is con-" ~? templating no more direct connection with the European war than is necessary to protect American rights on the high seas.
