Hunley, ! secretary of the Board of Trade of (Chesterfield, made complaint to tha Railroad Commission of South Carolina in regard to the poor mail ser vice upon the Chesterfield & Lancaster R. R.; and also made a r^N quest for Sunday mail service. N- Mr. W. L. Stanley, assistant to the President of the Seaboard Air Line Railway, with headquarters in Atlanta, and Mr. C. Lane, superintendent of the C. & L. Railroad, with headquarters at Marion, S. C., came to Chesterfield Wednesday to hold a conference with Mr. Hunley rcla- 1 tive to the matter. Messrs. Stanley and Lane staled in the conference that the railroad company was op- 1 erating the C. & L. at a dead loss, < as each year the revenues of the 1 road were not sufficient to pay expenses and that the deficit last year ' L- .totaled $10,000. However, they 1 stated, that it was the desire of the ' railroad company to furnish the very best services possible to their patrons I nnd that they intended doing every- 1 thing in their power looking toward i tViio on/I tUof f -1 ?? ? ? ?* ? W. Cole, of the Hopewell section, had the misfortune to lose tyro mules a few days ago. He is a poor man, and had only the two ^ mules. L. and ' also whenever the north bound Sea- | board No. 4 is late in the morning, j will bring the daily papers from Co- j lumbia. This motor car will also bring the daily papers every Sunday afternoon. During the conference Mr. Hunley insisted that the motor car, in uddition to bringing the daily papers, also bring all delayed first class mail, but the railroad officials would not promise this because they are afraid that the capacity of the motor car will not allow that to be done. They agreed, however, that they would keep this matter in mind with a view to granting this request and if it was possible they would do so. It certainly will be good news to .he people of Chesterfield, Pageland, Ruby and Mt. Croghan to know that, is soon as the motor car arrives (and ;his will not be long off now) thai whenever the north bound train over he Seaboard is late that they can get heir State and Record at least that ifternoon, and not have to wait unil the following day. Odom and G. N. Clanton made a business trip to Chesterfield Friday. Mr. J. II. Brown, of near Angelus, made a business trip on this route Friday. Mr. J. II. Tiller, county demonstration agent, and Mr. L. L. Baker, State Agent for the corn and pig clubs visited our school one day last week. Both made excellent instructive talks to the boys. A number of the boys joined, nu king the clubs much larger than last year. Miss Stella Mims came down Wednesday of- last week to organize a tomato and poultry club. She was successful in organizing a large club of each. The boys and girls are working. What are you going to do?
