With bhe fall of France, the plight of these hounded scholars has become more pressing than ever. Just what the addition of 4.0UU scholars to the American intelligentia would mean is a proF lent for the economists and scinetists to solve. However we clip a few paragraphs on this subject from an article of Benjamin Fine in the New ^ York Times: Shunted from country to country, fleeing in the wake of Hit? , lor's military and ideological ar mies, thousands of refugee sehol' are on the Continent of. Europe are in imminent danger of imprisonment or death. With the fall of France, the plight of these hounded scholars, Tserious enough trr TP reflt- years," ~h n sr~b rrmnr irrft rr itely more pressing today. Various public-spirited individuals and organizations have, during the last seven years, helped many brilliant educators, Nobel Prize winners among them, to find an asylum in this country. However, the problem is now far too serious to be handled by individual action, .Dr. Alvin Johnson, drcitcor of the New School for Socral Research, explained-trf an interview yesterday. Undei his leadership a committee is meet ing on Thursday to formulate plans( for a permanent body to coordinate all the work that is now being' done in this field. ? Possibly as many, as i.QfiP able scholars, intellectual leaders of r?*o XT r> rw I XT'.- ? x * cjurope, .are Trapped in France, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Norway and all other lunds that have felt the iron whip of Hitlerism. Of this number at least?the top-notch scholarsshould be admitted to this country immediately, Dr. Johnson declared. Unless that is done much that is fine- worthwhile and valuable will disappear from out Western civilization, the educato?" said earnestly. In his opinion the future of not only the social sciences but the physical sciencesas well rests with the United States. Culture cannot thrive under a Nazi system. More than any man in the land, Dr. Johnson has taken the lead in helping: the persecuted foreign scholars. Seven years ago, when Adolph Hitler, newly in power, began his devastating purge, horrifying civilized men and women everywhere, Dr. Johnson organized his University in Exile as a haven for the oppressed. Each year has h'as brought eminent .exiles from Germany, Austria, Czecho-Slovakia and Italy to this grad| uate school, now recognized And i respected throughout the country ft, , r DEFEND AMERICAN [' DEMOCRACY By Mary Alice Duncan Democracy is a spirit of Christianity of one individual toward a-J npther or one nation toward anether.
