With bhe fall of France, the
plight of these hounded scholars
has become more pressing than
ever. Just what the addition of
4.0UU scholars to the American
intelligentia would mean is a proF

to solve. However we clip
a few paragraphs on this subject
from an article of Benjamin Fine
in the New ^ York Times:
Shunted from country to country,

more pressing today.
Various public-spirited individuals
and organizations have, during
the last seven years, helped
many brilliant educators, Nobel
Prize winners among them, to find
an asylum in this country.
However, the problem is now
far too serious to be handled by
individual action, .Dr. Alvin Johnson,
drcitcor of the New School
for Socral Research, explained-trf
an interview yesterday. Undei
his leadership a committee is meet

Unless that is done much that

In his opinion the future
of not only the social sciences but
the physical sciencesas well rests
with the United States. Culture
cannot thrive under a Nazi system.
More than any man in the land,
Dr. Johnson has taken the lead in
helping: the persecuted foreign
scholars. Seven years ago, when
Adolph Hitler, newly in power,
began his devastating purge, horrifying
civilized men and women
everywhere, Dr. Johnson organized
his University in Exile as a
haven for the oppressed. Each
year has h'as brought eminent .exiles
from Germany, Austria, Czecho-Slovakia
and Italy to this grad|
