In its first year of operation the Department was given Sticte appropriations totaling c $1,620,000, nblic assistance amounts benig nrtched by ttTPnrximatoly equti jums from the Federal Governnent. Nearly two months of the isc?l year passed before any a_ vtrds were made, so that the /tar's operations Covered only a ittle mcrre than ten months. The mmber of cades added increased rraduailv from zero in August. 937, to 28,359 in June 1938 the ast month of the fisciJ year. The reduced amount of State funds for public assistance closed an approximately equal re luction in Fedeial funds, which nouns that around one million lollers less was provided for the urrent fiscal year than was nvai) ble during the year ended June 0, 1939. This fact is the reason t has become necessary.-to sus_f ien<i or reduce many public assis a nee awards. The State Board directed that n bringing total awpg-ds within he reduced amount available, all ases should be reviewed as iromptlv as possible, that awards 1 hould W given only to those ound to be in greatest need, and hat n0- cists be added except hose in emergent need. Detailed nsti actions as to effecting these I etrenchments directed that cases hown by review to have become I icligible for assistance should be loscd; that cases in which food nd shelter can be furnished tenr1 orarilv bv relatives, and cases' heif .recipients held insurance u 1 ieies or unmortgaged proper. y with small loan value, be sus'. ended pending the recipient's uso f this resource.
