The Allen university choir presented "Belshazzar" (chorak cantata) at vesper Sunday evening to a large audience in the univer sity auditorium. Professor F. Palmer Abraham's choir is a f chaijm to music lovers at all timep, and the music is a big feature of the vesper services every Sunday evening. It's a treat to hear them sing. Mrs. Ratliff made some' very encouraging remarks concerning the club. : ; We were glad to have our secretary out agin who has been ill for several weeks. LE CERCLE DE PLAISIR * ^e Cercle de Plaisir met in its regular meeting Saturday evening' Feb. 11 at the home of Mrs. Emma Tillman, with Misses A. L. Bomar and A. E. Reid as hostesses. The feature of entertainment was bridge. Miss M. A. Baker was high scorer; Miss M. E. Gor don second high scorer arid Miss. E. E. Hurley low scorer. Three| prizes were awarded. After enjoying several progres sions oi- bridge, the hostesses ser ved a very tempting repast of sal mon salad and pimento cheese sandwiches heart shaped, fruit . cocktail, frozen dessert, chocolate and cocoanut lalyer cake and tea, which was enjoyed by all. Miss Cleo Thomas of Wadesboro in. l., was present. We were very glad to have her with us. The group spent a very pleaa ant evening. C.?On Saturday evening-at-b o'efoek the?Elite Soc _ ial club of Lancaster was entertained by Mrs. Juanita Garris. Af ter playing several hands of bridge, Miss Annie Lee Vincent was presented the high score prize and Miss Majorie Clinton was pre sented the low score prize. A two course "luncheon consisting of pine apple and carrot salad and ice cream was served. The members of the club were, happy to have as honored guests i Miss Louise Babcock of Chester; Miss Mary Wright of Lancaster' and - Miss Grace Blackwell ofj Union.^Each of these was presented a souvenir of Lancaster. Although some of the members' were absent the group enjoyed aj very evening. STATE COLLEGE CLUB NEWS Benrettsville?The State Col- j lege club of Mailboro county had its first social affair on Friday, February 17, a dance at the Rec-' reational center. It was quite a| colorful affair, and a success. We had quite a few guests from out-of-town. They were1 here from Marion, Mullins, Nich-' ols, Dillon, Hartsville, Cheraw,' Laurinburg, N. C., Wadesboro, N.1 C., and many near by places. "Lift Every Voice and Sing" was the first song; \it was sung with a deep and appreciative feeling as it is the Negro National Anthem. The devotional exercises were conducted by Prof. Z. Townsend. after which the Schofleld school rendered two very beautiful songs. The program continued with the welcome address by Prof. R. L. Nix. vice-president of Aiken County Teachers' association. Prof Nix gave a very warm and hearty welcome to the teachers in behalf of Aiken county. "We feel glad and very happy to welcome you here today to Aiken county which composes of 157 teachers" he said, "We hope that your sfay added. Miss Justine E. Wilkinson pre- sentcd Supt. Byrd of Aiken coun ty. Supt. Byrd expressed his ap oreciation and gratitude to the group of teachers for the interest "hown by attending the Joint as sociation. He began his address by asking the question, "What makes the school and what is the school? It matters not how fine the school building may be, if thej teachers do not go into it with all their hearts, it is not much good" he declared. "As far as education is concerned, I 6elieV8""nmt the school and the church go hand in hand in making good citizens" He continue^, "If the teacher makes the child know he knows h's work, he will^ have the boys and girls under control in his classroom". In regards to health he said, "teach the child to protect his health because we can do nothing without~it". Mrs. E. P. Kennedy, Aiken Co. Adult Supervisor was present. She expressed feeling to do what she could to help out in any way possible. After the reassemble, Bettis Junior college girl quartet gave two?vary?splendid selections?of-music. Reports were made on what went on in the different groups; three minutes wore given to the 9 groups, all reports centered around school management and improvement. After the reports, a real treat came when Miss Justine E. Wilk Inson presented Miss Shellie T. Northcutt, Special Jeanes teacher from Washington, D. C. Miss Northcutt's address appealed to every "person present. She deliv ered a message that will long re-, main in our minds as she gave us somthing to thinlr about that will be of much importance in every day life. She showed the teachers the necessity and value of be-4 ing truthful and real?she termed) it, "put the cards on the table". Music after her address was fur-j nished by Ridge Hill school. His address proved to be very fitting and expedient. A keen eye of interest was shown by the lrge crowd of teachers as the Morris college president expressed the many ways in which Our race can be developed to an even better one. He suggested to the group "to forget the past and look to the future with an aim to achieve". Aiken county teachers, as well as many others, were happy and very proud-to welcome again its President, Prof. A. W. Nicholson, who has recuperated after being confined to his bed for over a month.
