The late Dr. Mance and I were very dear ["riends. I visited him in his afflictions sven to the last night of his death. For over five years he would confer with me in arranging the-memorial pretty well familiar with his desires along that lffie. And as the time had arrived when he arid I usually mapped out our program. He was still too sick 10 be approached with the subject. I jisked the grand chancellor to permit me to go ahead with Dr. Mance's work for. him and in case that his illness wtfuTcT prevefff his beii^g present at the grand lodge session his worn \vouici oe reaay and the body not embarrassed; Tothis .the grand chancellor consented; "Neither of us anticipated the death of the grand_prelate befurc the session of the grand lodge. Hence we were oi|ly looking forward to the taking care of his work so that he could be unanimously re-elected on his sick bed. It was Mance's interest and not his place that prompted my-actions. And aftfer^ 1 had gone forward with the arrangement of the program- for him, the end came to our sad regret, then the frrand Chancellor assigned me the place.
